From Meta Info Team The How and Why of Meta Info

Hello Die-hard Fans: DVDFab Meta Collection Campaign Needs Your Hands

Before getting to the details, it is necessary to explain what the word “Meta” is all about. The meta here refers to the Meta information, aka Metadata, which includes all the basic information about a commercial Blu-ray movie disc, such as Titles, Front Cover, Description (Synopsis), Studio, Release Year, Running Time/Duration, Genre(s), Director, Actors, Parental Rating, etc.

    What’s and Why Meta Collection?

Meta Info is a brand new feature introduced in two of the DVDFab Blu-ray related products, Blu-ray Copy and Blu-ray Ripper, to be more specific. The primary goal of this feature is to gather the above mentioned Meta information of Blu-ray discs, which can be achieved by DVDFab customers manually editing and uploading via the DVDFab client.

Haven't got DVDFab Blu-ray Copy or Blu-ray ripper? It's time to get them at 40% discount!

Discount Coupon: METAINFO Valid to: Feb 20, 2016.

Note: The Meta Info Contest Campaign will be end on Feb 20, 2016.

Why collect the Meta Info? By doing so, we have the following objectives in mind:

² To Significantly Enhance the Overall User Experience with DVDFab.
The Meta information uploaded by customers is stored on a DVDFab Server so that every user, paid or nonpaid, can have access. Suppose someone else has uploaded the Meta information of the Life of Pi, and you happen to have this disc too and are about to make a backup or conversion with DVDFab. When you see the analysis results with the highly detailed information of each title magically open before your eyes, including the title name, what content in the title, and then runtime, etc, what would you think? Wow, it is amazing! Yes, that is what DVDFab wants all the users to experience. This could be extremely helpful especially when there are several fake titles in a disc to prevent you from knowing which one is the real movie title to back up or convert or the disc has lots of bonus features. In other words, analysis accuracy of DVDFab gets improved, and so does the user experience, with easier, better decisions about your backups!

² To Make Your Media Server Smarter than Ever
This objective is actually an extra benefit of the first one; it works like this: if you have a TV Show disc with a bunch of episodes, after conversion, you will see the converted files named in series order, like Friends.S01E01, Friends.S01E02, Friends.S01E03if you have all the ten seasons of the Friends, then list can grow all the way down to, Friends.S10E24. This is not enough, when you have all these converted video files added to your home media streaming server, say Plex or Serviio, or anything else similar, you will find that it suddenly becomes smarter than ever before, because it can automatically have these videos sorted out and then have them kept in the right category, similarly like the one you see below.

Bingo! In the end, streaming videos from your home media server becomes a pleasure, especially when you have tons of TV Shows and movies stored there.

Doing This Might Require Your Dedication
Rome was not built in one day, and the Meta Info feature won’t be either. It is a huge and continuous project that is time consuming, maybe labor eating as well. There is a long journey to go before we have enough Blu-ray discs’ Metadata on DVDFab Server, so that everyone at anytime can take advantage of this giant database. This is also why we chose to carry out the campaign here in the Forum, because we cannot simply ask every DVDFab customer to do it if they are not really ready to get involved. But, to the guys in the Forum, it is different. Most forum members are die-hard fans that frequently come back, not just to give product feedback, but also to reach out their helping hands to others.
A good beginning is half the way to success! We need the first volunteers to give the project a good start. So, guys(and girls), your helping hands are appreciated.

How to upload the Meta Information?
For the details on how to upload the Meta information, please move to this thread:

    http://forum.dvdfab.cn/showthread.php?t=28200

    One More Thing (or Two)

To encourage more volunteers to get into this campaign, we also have some incentive plans here. We know most of you will do this regardless whether or not there are such bonuses. But it is our sincere gratitude to thank those who do make their contribution to help the entire DVDFab community, to make DVDFab a better product. Anyway, check out our reward plans.

    ² Forum Titles
Depending on how much Meta information the contributor uploads, he or she will get the following Forum user titles:
    • -Meta Contributor: volunteers/contributors who uploaded the Metadata for 1 Blu-ray disc
    • -Meta Active: volunteers/contributors who uploaded the Metadata for more than 20 Blu-ray discs
    • -Meta Specialist: volunteers/contributors who uploaded the Metadata for more than 100 Blu-ray discs
    • -Meta Expert: volunteers/contributors who uploaded the Metadata for more than 200 Blu-ray discs

As a reminder: to get the Forum title, you need to set the FC Member username the same as your DVDFab Forum username.

    ² Amazon Gift Card

Additionally, we also offer material incentive via the Amazon Gift Card. The volunteer/contributor will accumulate $1 for uploading the Metadata of a Blu-ray movie disc, and $1.50 for a season disc, respectively.

The extra award: The top three contributors accumulating more than $100 will get an extra $500, $300 and $100 respectively.

When the total sum accumulated exceeds $20, and is in multiples of 10, the volunteer/contributor can receive an Amazon Gift Card. For instance, suppose that a volunteer/contributor is ready to upload the Meta information of 19 Blu-ray TV Show discs, then he or she will accumulate 19x$1.5=$28.50, however, when redeemed, he or she will get a $20 Amazon Gift Card, instead of a $28.50 Gift Card since the cards are pre-purchased with the $20 amount.

      Sounds Attracting

If this feature can be carried out successfully, it could be damn good for Blu-ray users. I'll try to do my part!

That is good to hear, Simon. It is a great feature and will get even better as the database expands.

DVDFab User - Meta Project email

I have been a licensed user of DVDFab for many years (back to the version 4 or 5 series, as I recall). I am currently a lifetime licensed user of DVDFab (DVD & a couple of other options, but not Blu-Ray), Passkey & Media Player. I no longer purchase or rent DVDs, as I switched to HD media (HD-DVD & Blu-Ray) early in 2008.
I am happy to participate in the Meta project, but I'm not sure I can since Passkey doe not seem to support Meta and that is what I use the4se days to decrypt and rip my blu-ray titles.
If I am misunderstanding how this works, and I can assist somehow, please let me know.

thank you very much for your long term support and using DVDFab products, Rich86. Passkey is a decrypter to decypt discs. If you want to use the Meta Info function, you should have a Blu-ray Copy or Blu-ray Ripper. If you have not got one of them, you may get them at 40% discount.

I haven't purchased a license yet, but with this new metadata feature, I’m probably going to be buying the whole suite. First, though, I have a couple of questions:
              1. Is it possible to test this feature when using the trial version of the app? So far, I haven't been able to test out any of the metadata-related features.
              2. Is there going to be a similar metadata feature for DVDs? Or is this just for Blu-rays? (And if it is just for Blu-rays, why is this?)

                1) If you load a supported Blu-ray with the trial version I think you should be able to see the Meta Info others have contributed, but not contribute any yourself.

                2) Possibly at some point; building the Info database to useful levels requires time and is not without costs and I think most Fab users are moving (or have moved already) to Blu-ray. This is supported by sales figures for Fab products.

I can tell you that I was slow to adopt BD, but would never go back to DVD now.

A consumer tip: if you are considering the All-In-One package, you would be wise to do it during the current promotion before it expires. There will almost certainly be a price increase for A.I.O. which now includes the CinaviaRemoval HD module.

                  Hello,
that's sound interesting. But I have some questions.

                  1) What do you mean with "... you need to set the FC Member username the same as your DVDFab Forum username."? FC Member???

                  2) During the upload of the metaInfo will there be any personal data or ip-adresses transmitted and stored?

                  3) What if someone submitts meta data for a blu-ray which already is available in the database. Will the accumulation of the amazon gift card still be counted?

                  4) Can the coupon be used for purchasing a bundle (for exapmle Fab copy + ripper)?

I will appreciate if you could provide me the answers.

                  Best Regards!

                    Hi ghostp

                    1) It is just the name by which the account is known, like your forum nickname here. You can't get the special user titles if you choose a different name to use on the Meta Info system, but you can actually choose any name you want.

                    2) I use a VPN with a changing IP, so I do not think that matters or is stored. It may send the serial number of your DVDFab installation just because it needs something for the record keeping that must be done to provide the rewards.

                    3) If the title has already had data submitted, then that title is said to be "owned" by someone else and generally you won't be allowed to submit info for it. If you run into Meta Info data that has errors when you open a disc, you can submit corrections by clicking the Report icon on the Meta Info editing window.

                    4) This has been revised since day one, but you can spend the coupons(if those are still being offered) on anything on the Fab list. If those are not still part of the equation, you will be stuck with pesky cash by way of an online gift card (Amazon, etc).

Since I originally asked this question, I've bought the whole suite. It mostly works, but I’m again left wondering why DVDs aren’t supported. Yes, I understand that Blu-rays are better than DVDs, and I buy them whenever I’m given the choice. Unfortunately, though, a lot of content is still only available on DVD.

I’m ripping my entire library, and when I’m ripping my DVDs, I’m figuring out what every title is. My efforts are being wasted, because they'll only ever help me. I'd love it if the time that I’m spending could help other users in the future. And likewise, I'd love to take advantage of the efforts of other people as well.

So, yeah, I understand that it would take some effort to also support DVDs. But would it take that much effort? The bones are already there, since you already have support built in for Blu-rays. Are DVDs that much different that would make it impossible to support them?

I agree with this.. DVD should be supported as well.. I use more dvd than BD so it would be to my advantage to be able to help if dvd was supported.

DVDFab now gathers DVD Metadata from internet sources. The collection process begins now when you load a DVD for which the Metadata is not already available. If the disc is either very new or very old, you may see this popup:
