Multiple Frame Rates in VOB's After Copy

I have run into this twice now and after days of searching (probably poorly) I can not find an answer to my problem. Please excuse me for not finding this on my own as I am sure this has come up before but I just can not find the proper solution after giving a valiant effort.

The VOB's on some of the DVD copies show different frame rates when analized in MediaInfo. The first one is always 29.970 and those that follow are 23.976.

This causes an audio sync issue when converting to AVI. I can play the individual VOB's just fine but as soon as I try and combine them and make a file for my media server I have this problem.

I am using DVDfab 8.0.4.8 (17/11/2010) to copy just the main movie. This is the trial version but I am looking forward to purchase if this can be resolved. I should mention that I am also getting the same results using the older DVDdecrypter Which I am planning on replacing with DVDfab.

The two movies that I have run into this on are the special edition Conan the Barbarian and the original XXX

That's kind of weird. DVDs are always 29.97 fps and BDs are always 23.976 fps, so I'm not sure why it would be reporting that for some of the VOBs. Where did you get these movies from?

and where are log files? And since you used MediaInfo would be nice if you was to post the info from it to your post as well.

Also is this a Problem with DVDFab DVD Copy or a problem with DVDFab DVD Ripper.

The other 3 VOB's are the same as #2 (I can post those if you would like.) I notice that the first VOB is interlaced where as the second is progressive. Perhaps being so new to this there is a setting that I missed to force all to one or the other (I would assume that progressive would be the better choice)

This is a problem encountered with both DVDfab DVD Copy, or if I use DVDdecrypter. As for the log file , do you want to see the Stream info .txt file, or the VOB.idx, or both?

I am using DVDfab in windows XP sp3 as I am having some trouble finding decrypters for Linux that are current (DVDfab did a fantastic job for me on Last airbender, and encoded perfectly on avidemux as do 95% of my projects, I have just ran into this twice now after encoding a hundred or so of my movies for my media server.

I have not had an issue when I copied my XXX to DVD using XP, Vista or Windows 7 as the DVD that DVDFab produced played perfectly on computer and on 4 different DVD players that I have hooked up to TV in house.

Now does the original rip of DVD play correctly before you change it to combine? If that correct then what are you using to combine the vobs as that is where the problem would be. If you not use DVDFab DVD Ripper VOB Passthrough to combine to one VOB then I suggest to try that and in the Edit section select Deinterlacing to see if helps

Same result coming straight out of the copier before anything else is done. I am now looking for where to find the DVDfab log files to let you look at them (hint, where are they :D) I will find them on my own given enough time. I love this stuff. Not upset at all, I just want to find the answers!

By the way if I just wanted to burn a copy of the DVD onto a physical medium, I am sure I could and that would work. But I know that there has to be a way to encode this into AVI or MKV. I was reading in the Doom9 forum about similar issues and ways around it but it looks like a bunch of experimentation with command coding in ffmpeg or mencoder until you find the right way to do it. I just do not have time to play around for days doing this (wish I did)

Some DVD have both frame rates 23.976 and 29.97, but this is no problem.
DVDFab do well.
I used dvd Bewithced with two frame rates to convert to avi and mainmovie, DVDFab worked fine.
Please reinstall the newest version DVDFab and retry it.

MediaInfo often reports incorrect frame rates for NTSC, although it is usually the NTSC field rate (2X frame rate) that you see. I don't see how DVDFab DVD Copy could change the frame rate in any way for DVDs, since it does not fully decode or encode the video. For Blu-ray Copy/Rip or DVD Ripper, I suppose it is possible. See if you can find a program called MPEG Validator if you want to look at the VOB files, or try the info box in the preview player in ImgBurn. IFOEdit will also let you see what the IFOs say the frame rate should be, but I have found this is also incorrect on some discs. I have the original xXx somewhere and will look at it if I can find it.

Complication

The difference in frame rate is due to the way DVD authors stitch the video together. The very beginning part with the studio logo(s) is probably in 29.97 since it is designed to be put on DVDs. The movie is usually 23.976 progressive which is then flagged with repeated frames (pulldown) to make it comply with the DVD requirement of 29.97. MediaInfo is smart enough to ignore the repeated frames and report the true FPS on the film parts. However, MediaInfo is designed for files that are consistent for the entire file, which DVDs are not.

If you do main movie again but tell DVDFab to start with chapter 2 then the first VOB may indeed have 23.976 in MediaInfo.

Now that is very clever and consistent with what I have seen on doom9 forums. I never thought to use vob2 as the first selected file. What you are saying then is that this will serve as the reference for the encoder as far as frame rate but it will still stitch the vob's together in the proper order? This sounds like a very simple answer and worth investing 45 minutes of encoding time.

I do not have a burn log as I sent the output to a folder for encoding. I am thinking of burning a copy of the movie to disk and then demuxing that to see if perhaps I get a better result.

Umm... no... I said start with chapter 2 so that you could verify what MediaInfo was saying is caused by the extra starting video. The second file is not chapter 2, it is just the 1G limit line for the DVD specification. Sorry, I was offering an explanation rather than a solution.

Demuxing the tracks will not help as the 2 different FPS will still be in the same track. You need to find a way to cut the intro off the video. Unfortunately, DVDFab does not support cutting the video except at chapter points. You might consider posting in this thread:

I know the old DVD Shrink program allows you to set start and end points. Since you have ripped the DVD to the hard drive with DVDFab and removed any copy protection, you could use Shrink to create yet another copy that has the start and end points you want. Then your normal AVI creation method might work correctly. However, these forums are not the appropriate place to get support for other programs.

Yes I got that after I replied to you. Right now I am using the dvdfab converter to try a convert to xvid/avi after trying the vob merge in deinterlace mode suggested by AGJ. This did not help in avidemux but seems to be working in the dvdfab converter (at least as far as the preview goes).

Thank you very much Complication, your input will be very useful if this encoding does not work (and even if it does). I will keep you all informed as to the progress.

By the way, I have purchased DVDfab copy and ripper (even if it will keep me out of linux a bit..lol) as it does a fantastic job decrypting and ripping. If this encode fails I suppose that I have another adventure awaiting me in shrink.

Well.... DVDfab did the best job encoding to AVI after stitching together the VOB's using de-interlace. The audio is perfect in the beginning, and gets to be about 2-3 seconds off by the end of the film (far better than any other encoder has done).

Using the frame cutting option and re-authoring still gives the sync issue as well. Just making a burned copy of the movie works perfectly. The trouble lies in re-encoding and I am sure that this is because of the nature of the first VOB's title section. Fantastic education I am getting here!

DVDfabs rip of the VOB's into one large VOB works for streaming and that was the point of all this to begin with so I am content with a slightly larger file that I can stream for the moment. And I love the way DVDfab supports the latest in decryption so that I can put my movie collection (one way or the other) on my media server.

The recent update to DVDFab fixed this problem. I am not sure if my post had anything to do with this but the timing is perfect and leads me to believe that it was . If this is in relation to my post, I thank you very much. Further I must ad that this is the best response to a customer concern that I have seen in my close to 30 years of involvement with PC's. This concern for customer satisfaction, attention to detail, and technical expertise rivals anything I have come across in this time. You have a customer for life.
