I was wondering how much compression is too much when compressing a movie down to a BD-25 disc? At what percentage of compression will you start to see the quality of video suffer? Anybody have any thoughts?

How much is too much? Either you compress it down to fit on a BD-25 or don't and put it on a BD-50. The question would then be, how much can your wallet or purse suffer by buying BD-50s as opposed to BD-25s? The 50s are still quite pricey! Then it comes down to the next question ... just how GOOD is the movie and does it "justify" putting it on a 50? I've copied my $40 Avatar movie to a 25 and didn't really see any video degradation. Me too,DZ. Just bought my copy of Tron. Removed hd audio and ending credits and it fit. I'm set at 23000 so as not to burn to the edge. Only way to go, pop it in and watch the movie.

wish i knew how to remove the credits :-(

Most likely you just remove the last chapter which is usually the end credits. I did it with Sin City to get it to fit uncompressed on a 25GB disc with HD audio selected.

Some of us do want the BS and extra stuff not just the movie. That's great if Main Movie only suites you but some of us are still waiting for a Blu-Ray Cuntomize feature like on DVD Copy so we can pull out the useless previews and what seems to be extra copies of the movies embedded in the disc to make it bigger and just have the movie, menus and extras with minimal compression. Extra unneeded padding seems to be the reason that movies are compressed so low. I've had many movies that are supposed to be the same quality(56-60%) and are roughly the same disc size within .5GB and the compressed bit rate widely varies. Some recompress at about 12000-15000 kbps and others recompress at 8000-10000 kbps even after removing HD audio and the only thing the seem to have in common are what seem to be 2-3 extra copies that have the same or similar runtimes as the first title. Last word was that the developers are still working on Customize but it is hopefully coming. Once again if you want the main movie that's great but if you don't you shouldn't let the"why do you the want the extras and BS" attitude change you from want you want for your Blu-Rays. And to DVDFabs' credit those movies that came out with a 8000-10000kbps compression range the quality was actually quite good. Still better looking quality than the compressed HD on most networks.

Like I said it's me I have all the movie channels and when a movie I have backed up comes on and is played continously having it on BD is moot. So I use BDRE and erase and backup something new. New features are gonna be great for Fab and all the users, this is not an attitude it's just how I do it!

Compression to me defeats the whole purpose of Blu-Ray. Dvd not so much. My general rule is 90% of the original for dvd. Blu-Ray I don't compress. I know some of you might think I'm crazy for spending bucket loads of money on 50gb discs. but I like to retain the original quality when backing up my Blu-Rays. JMHO!

I have all the pay channels, here in the USA and say when a new movie comes out like Predators the network will play it over and over and over and over, I have it on BDRE and at that point I can erase it and put another movie on it.

Sorry, the thread is rather old but it concerns exactly my problem...
I made a Blu-Ray "movie only" backup with Expendables 2(title 684) with only the HD track and the final size it's about 24GB...
I would like to cut the endings in order to make the movie to fit in a BR single layer...
Here comes the issue: The movie is split in 17 chapters and the last one includes 10minutes of the movie as well, making impossible the cut...
Is there any option that allows me to select the title start/end settings by HH/MM/SS? otherwise the only option I have is to remove the HD audio... :(

any suggestion?

You don't necessarily have to clip the ends to make it fit on a BD25. You can have the software compress the movie to fit on your BD25. The quality will be about 98% of original. You will never see the difference.

ok, I got your point (in this case it would be 92% compression, not so much), but that means that at the moment there is no other option than chapter selection?

You are correct, there is not an option yet for frame by frame only chapters.
This has been requested before but has yet to be implemented into Fab.

If burning a regular blu ray try burning the 24 gig file with img burn if the file is to big img burn gives two choices burn to end of disk that will cut the ending where the disk ends or over burn it will try to burn to areas of the disk not used doing this sometimes works well other times you get reading errors.Imgburn trys to record the extra data if its not much over the disk normal.I can get 23.9 gigs on a 25 gig Tdk or Digistor blu ray write once disk rewritable disks are a tad smaller and fit less data so if your disk is 24 gigs img burn should be able to burn it maybe normally if not the i would try write to end of disk first.

If burning 3d
You can use img burn with a (3d iso) if the file is a little to big img burn will tell you and ask if you want to use burn to the end of disk or over burn.If you use burn to the end of disk it may just cut the ending off where the disk runs out if you use overburn it will try to burn all of the bluray to parts of the disk not normally used sometimes you will get write errors and sometimes it works fine.
Now if the reduced file is not a iso then put it back into fab bluray copy write data and change the target from your blu ray drive to a iso fab folder by clicking the blue disk in a hand next to target then in about 20 mins your 3d file will be turned into a 3d iso with all the 3d files in it.Close fab go back into fabs files under iso's drag and burn that file in img burn (iso to disk).Img burn must burn a iso not a file when working with 3d.

Yeah,I know what u mean with the overburning and that's an option.:)
but...sorry,I don't understand what it has to do with 3d iso...the movie it's in 2d :confused:
