Original resolution not kept

I have been using DVDFab to rip DVD's for a couple of years now and have recently upgraded my home systems to be compatible with Blu-ray so figured it wss time I ripped them too and stored them on my server for easy playback.
All this works fine except when DVDFab rips the BD it does not keep the original aspect ratio.
For example, I am currently trying to rip 'The Social Network'. The original resolution is 1920 x 1080 however the bext I can get is 1920 x798 from DVDFab. This is annoiying in so much that the original shows as letterbox on my TV (the original has thin black bars top and bottom of the picture included in the original resolution) but with the DVDFab rip the black bar top and bottom and much thicker.
While this is not un-watchable is does leave a lot of redundant space on my TV, which I hate!
I have tried to mess around with the crop ration etc but I cannot get it to show the original resolution.

Has anyone else experience this or know of a solution?

You can manually set it to any resolution you want. Why not just force 1920x1080?

I have the same problem, even if you manually change the resolution to 1080 it still puts the black bars on top and bottom. If the bluray is played on a player it fills the whole screen.

I have tried to mess with the resolution and custom crops etc but the outout is still 'smaller' than the original.

I either have additional black bars top and bottom or an increased left and right crop akin to a zoom.

Quite annoying, is there anyway around it?

The Social Network is not a 1.78:1 movie, it is 2.35:1 but your TV screen is 1.78:1. This movie will always have black bars top and bottom unless you zoom it with your TV's or player's controls or manually crop it with DVDFab when converting. This means it is 1920x820 or so when decoded and cropped to convert only the active video. Note that when you zoom or crop you are giving up content on each side of the image in exchange for a full screen, a poor tradeoff with many movies.

DVDFab should not encode black bars on the sides, if it is, it is not being cropped correctly.

this is the same issue i reported in this thread:

full aspect source is being letterboxed by dvdfab when being converted to mkv. the original source is full 1920x1080, yet no settings in the interface for video settings allow this to be converted to this full HD resolution.

three films that never convert properly are Toy Story 1, 2, and 3. i just retested these on the latest release 8.1.1.2 (and beta 8.1.1.8) and the same problem still exists.

Hi n_m,
Please use the lastest build 8119 QT beta .
In my test, it's OK. The output file's resolution is same as the settings in conversion settings page. So give it a try.

I am aware the original is letterbox, but DVDFab is changing the aspect ratio and making the effectively (from what I see) making the black bars at the top and bottom thicker.

I will try the beta version and see how things pan out.

Let's see if it sorts out the CUDA problems as well...... :rolleyes:
