Anyone know the best brand or player to get to play the cinivia recorded movies. I have all PS3's and they are above the 4.10 downloads. So I am considering getting a regular blu ray player but dont want to run into the same problem. Any advice would be appreciated!

Well, not Sony. Until recently they were almost the only ones that were infected, but that is no longer the case. Read through the Cinavia threads in this forum and the one called "Decryption Updates" for some ideas on players.

I'd say the absolute BEST are the media players like Dune and AIOS. You would never have to worry about Cinavia with those.

Ramrod, I have a Magnavox Blu-Ray player. I know it isn't the best manufacturer, but I have had no issues with anything I have backed up to watch on my HD TV's. The Blu-Ray player cost like $89.00 at the Blu**Mart store and frankly the best $89.00 I ever spent. I hear all kinds of issues about various manufacturers, specifically Sony... and I love Sony. All my bigscreens are Sony, and my regular DVD players as well.....

In other words, internal blu-ray players made for computers are currently exempt from such mandates. That's not to say they won't be in the future, though.

Anybody experience "cheap" made in China players? I would assume they are not likely to be ever affected by Cinavia, and probably Region-free as a bonus?

And when you consider it's only $89 US (even without the rebate)...not too shabby. @bergman, Did yours come with the new remote or the old crappy one. The remote is really my only complaint. PIVOS offered a $10 upgrade in June, but their stock was quickly depleted. Maybe I'll give it another shot

I too agree that media players are the only way to go. i thank you guys for pointing me in that direction. A coiple of years ago I purchased the Argosy HV335T and I am happy with that purchase. I have heard a lot of good things about the AIOS. Is it worth the money to change over from the Argosy?

I also have the HV335T and purchased the AIOS about a year ago, perhaps a bit more.
My opinion, a huge improvement.
It will play anything I throw at it, including BD mkv conversions and .ISO's, which honestly, are rare for me.

It'll also handle any of the audio files including Dolby TrueHD, which in and of itself, is a marked improvement over the Argosy.

The one complaint I have is the remote....it just plain sucks, but I've gotten used to it and I'm ok with it.
While it offers a great deal with respect to options/functions, the layout itself is horrible....3rd graders could have done a better job.

PIVOS has since replaced the remote with an improved model.
Amazon and newegg may still have some the old stock, but with some digging, hopefully you'll luck out.

Regardless, it is a huge improvement over the Argosy.

I didn't mean to say that mkv conversions are rare for me...only .ISO

mkv.h264.audiocopy is my preferred profile for BD as well as standard dvd archived content.

Thanks Maineman. I haven't made an ISO for over a year but I thought that Argosy played ISO. Anyway, it sounds like AISO is an improvement over Argosy. Can you tell me what brand hard drive you installed and did it work without any issues?

There is no law mandating Cinavia. Cinavia is a BDA license requirement. All BD players require a BDA license in order to decrypt and play commercial BD disks -- all players newly licensed after 2/2012 are required to support Cinavia as a term of the license. Unfortunately, the Cinavia blog here is not up to date regarding enabled players.

As for media players, I cast my vote for the WD Live series. I've been using them for years to stream my media all over my house and never had a BD player until my wife bought me one last Christmas -- it kinda collects dust now. I use DVD Fab to rip all my BD's and DVD's to 14TB of network storage spread across 2 NAS units and a Media PC -- the media-PC also records OTA HDTV which I can stream to the WD players. DVD Fab does a great job of allowing me to watch my purchased media the way that I choose to watch my media. Cinavia is a non-factor with regard to media players because they don't require a BDA license -- they only play non-encrypted content.

For the past 2+ years, I've mostly purchased:

from newegg... great reliablity and performance...no problems at all.
Stay clear of anything with less than 4 eggs

Honestly, in the last 15+ years, I've only had 1 hdd die on me and that was due to a lightning strike back in 2001.
Took out the motherboard and even fried the electric fuel pump in my Volvo which was parked in the garage...:eek::D

But for sure, some makes have slipped in quality control.

Thankfully, the prices are finally starting to normalize after last year's flooding in Thailand.
The F4's were just $99, US, with free shipping (like right now)

I have a lot of backups on external HDs that I use with my PC, which isn't dedicated to movies so I have to restart and hook the HDMI cable into my larger HDTV to utilize it. In addition to that, I've been getting ever so slight jitter that is bothering me more than it should so I'm opting for a standalone media player (although I was thinking of trying my hand at building a dedicated HTPC but fear of the jittering is preventing me from doing so). At first I was looking at the Dune but I don't see any USB 3.0 support except in the TV-301 compact model which has no DTS-HD MA support, and Dunes players also cost a lot more than the AIOS.

UPDATE: I just ordered the AIOS HD Media Center on Amazon for $89.99 with free shipping. I figured what do I have to lose?

Same thing, different terminology... unless you're speaking specifically about DVDFab's Blu-ray Ripper as opposed to Blu-ray Copy.

For $89 US, I doubt you'll be sorry...even if you get the older, crappy remote...:D, but hopefully you'll get the "updated" one.

I bought my AIOS a year ago and I have not experienced any files that are not supported and I still have the original firmware (US_2151 from 8/11).
I've played mkv (standard dvd and BD) and .ISO's (both BD and standard) from the get-go.
Maybe what you saw was a really old post?

Re: MTS-HD MA...this is getting out of my league.
The AIOS does support MTS-HD/7.1 ch via HDMI connection.

I did some perusing on the net in order to differentiate between MTS-HD MA and MTS-HD.
Opinions ranged from a huge difference to none.
I'm left with the sense that it probably won't make any difference to the average user, but in truth, I don't know beans about this.

I'm still using my tv's audio output. I'm just glad I don't have to remove the HD audio like I did to play via my older Argosy.
Since I rarely burn media, the difference in file size is negligble...for me anyway.

Besides, I'm planning on a new tv and a decent home theater system for Christmas.
I'd like to get a Bose system, but I don't want to tell the boss (wife) I'm paying more for it than the tv...:rolleyes::D

As I know that you are an "OLD FART" like me and had a misspent youth with Jimmi Henrix, led Zeppelin, etc, I'll just make a comment from experience.

I have 2 super uBeaut surround systems, 1 Pioneer, 1 Onkyo with huge speakers etc and a Bose SoundLink (A soundbar type system which sits in the front of the TV http://worldwide.bose.com/axa/en_au/web/bluetooth_speakers/page.html) all connected up. To put in perspective the Onkyo A/V amp alone cost me AUD 3000 while the SoundLink cost me AUD 450.

Guess what gets used 99% of the time? The Bose SoundLink!!!

The big ones rarely get turned on unless I want to piss the neighbours off!!! :p;):D

No dice at newegg, but Amazon has them at $299 US and $349 (leather trim) respectivelly.
Hard to beat Bose...nice small footprint and great sound.
