VSO inspector and read errors?

[SIZE=3]I have both VSO inspector and Nero SpeedDisk, I scanned District 9 with both and it was fraught with read errors. On this, and other structurally protected DVDs, disk read errors are parts of the protection scheme. If I scan it with an on the fly decrypter running in the back ground there are no errors at all, the decrypter defeats that part of the protection. Iâm sure there are no real errors, bad places in the plastic molding, because it backs up fine. I have a hunch that if there was a bad place on the disk it would show up even with the decrypter running but canât verify this. What are your thoughts? [/SIZE]

That is interesting . Glad you thought to run the test.
This may means that checking the disc for errors is meaningless unless an on the fly decrypter is also running.
I do not have that disc but will check a couple of others to see what happens.

That is going to complicate things a bit.

Yes, pretty much useless unless it will still detect a bad pressing with a decrypter running in the background. There are enough of those around that I'm sure I'll get one sooner or later.

You know I have been trying to figure this out for sometime now and have actually used VSO inspector on a DVD that had structoral protection with out another program running and it came back with no errors but I can not remember the movie but think it was Wall E

Yup, you're exactly right 90312.
This has occurred in the past for sure, which is why running an on-the-fly decrypter is recommended when checking the original disc .

Yeah I have too, not all structural protections use read errors as part of the mix. It's getting more common though.

I remembered having a really bad one, eat up with read errors. It was Tinkerbell the Disney flick. I'll attach a scan without a decrypter running and one with and you can see the pointless nature of scanning this kind of disk.

Your test result along with mine from this afternoon has convinced me to refrain from telling a poster to scan his disc for errors.

Me too, that used to be my fallback when a poster had serious problems reading a disk but now I think that it could really confuse the troubleshooting process.

I can test my tinkerbell as well using Nero disk speed on my XP computer and post images also to see if that what is happening as I know my tinkerbells are good DVDs. Which tinkerbell was it the first or second

My test was on the first Tinkerbell. I'm looking forward to your results. The tinkerbell in my test is good as well, I made a backup after this test just to satisfy myself. Mine is R1 bar code 8693626548.

Ok mine has the same bar code as yours and will give it a try soon using my other computer as it has Nero on it still. I will as well use VSO Inspector on the DVD since this thread is about VSO inspector

here are 2 scans with nero and 2 scans with VSO inspector. The first scan is with a decryptor running and the second is with out a decryptor running. But nero scans suck big time and are not reliable. Now the inspector scans the first is with a decryptor running and the second is with out a decryptor running. On the second scan it only says I have one error and 100% is good so with that result I would have to say my DVD is a good one
