I'm having a nightmare trying to rip S1 Disc 3 of the above Breaking Bad boxset (last episode of S1). I've been back to the shop and got them to replace the boxset thinking it was a faulty disc, but this one won't rip either and there doesn't appear to be any physical damage to it (ie scratches). All the other 20 or so DVDs rip OK, so it seems unlikely to be a protection scheme, but you never know! I've tried several different versions of DVDFab (9.3.1.6 up to 10.0.3 Alpha) and tried both with and without PathPlayer enabled, and with/without PGC removal so now I'm stuck. DVDFab either throws up an error dialog, or it happily reports that the DVD is a mere 7MB, which of course it isn't, even with only one episode on it rather than the three/four typically. Any thoughts?

Zaffy, there is a read error in the log and that will prevent back up. You can try the standard stuff, cleaning and inspecting for damage but it could be, as you say, just a badly manufactured disc.

The first log had no read error in the first try.The second time he tried their was a pathplayer error and read error both with pathplayer on both in first log.The second posted log had just the read error and 4m 33.76s: SourceSize: 7 MB. Turn pathplayer off clean disk put in newest version 10 post that log if it don't work. Might also check for a firmware update for your computer's dvd drives

Another Try @3dman7 Cleaned disc. Rebooted PC. Started up DVDFab 10.0.6 beta. Turned off pathplayer. Put disc in drive. DVDFab threw multiple error dialogs before I even started a rip. Log attached. @October262 Got a Samsung SH-222BB which is a few years old now. AFAIK I've got the latest possible firmware for this model. However, I've just ripped all 5 DVDs of Game Of Thrones season 6 with no problems. :confused:

Could be possible that your dvd reader/writer laser may be failingSince you say it's a few years old. Some discs will read ok and othersWill throw a fit.

Tried another machine a few days ago I also installed DVDFab (can't remember which version) on my daughters laptop a couple of days ago. It's fairly new (< 2 years) but the S01E07 disc 3 wouldn't rip there either, though it was the previous boxset that I have since exchanged. The DVD seems to play OK in Windows Media Player on my PC though :confused:

I believe this to be a copy protection.

First thing I tried to do when I bought the drive. Unfortunately neither the one from firmwarehq or from LGs own support site will flash. The app starts up, but when you select the button to perform the flash it comes up with a checksum error!

I'll do a bit of investigation first before I attempt to RMA it as it might just be the update that's at fault, not the drive.

I have 2 of these same drives a internal and a external both updated with the firmware link i provided to you they work fine.
You should never stop a update once it's started or have a power outage when updating firmware or you can loose the drive also you should only do the update nothing else on the computer at the same time.Also check the cable from the drive to the usb connection and the ends of the wires for loose fit or bad fitting.

New Drive Revision

Mine is a WH14NS40 with SVC Code NS50, manufactured June 2016, ROM Version 1.02.

According to this website http://club.myce.com/f91/lg-bh16ns50-bh16ns55-2nd-gen-bh14-wh14-bh16-wh16ns40-svc-code-ns50-2015-a-340457, the SVC code means it is a 2nd Revision model and shares hardware with the new 16NS50/NS55, which probably explains why the firmware you linked to (and that on the LG site) throws a wobbly.

This log shows NS40 not NS50. This is what I went by.

If the new drive was not used to post that log then it could be different I can only go by whats posted.

The log was from the (one and only) new LG drive. It seems that LG have put new innards in the drive (Mediatek MT1959) but not changed the model number (WH14NS40), just stuck an SVC Code NS50 on the outside label as well. So it appears to be a WH14NS40, except it's not!

Like you, I am also confused why a manufacturer would do something so seemingly nonsensical. Thankfully, picking the wrong firmware didn't brick the drive, but if it did, LG would have a lot to answer for.

Well that's not good as all the programs that reads it will miss id it and it's proper firmware.Is this a mainstream buy where did you get it?

I don't see if the insides to the drive are new why it doesn't id itself to software as the updated version this is really strange.

SOLVED with V10.0.1.3

10.0.1.3 has fixed whatever the problem was and a FullDisc rip to *.iso is the right size and plays properly in Kodi.
