feel free to call me "stupid" :) *i'm using paid version of dvdfab 6220 on windows vista. i'm also using 2 drives. one to rip - the other to burn with ImgBurn. question: *is there any way to speed up the amount of time it takes Fab to rip the disk? it's currently taking around 25 minutes to rip - then 5 minutes for the burn. thanks for any and all advice.

If it take longer than 8 minutes as an average for fab to rip to your hard drive then there is a problem either with your system or the disc.Is the disc dirty? Scratched? Is your reader in PIO mode?

I guess I should qualify the above time average to say my system is several years old and it takes 8 minutes +- to rip to a hard drive unless there is some scratches or the movie needs more than the usual compression. In the case of scratches or high compression it takes about 15 minutes +-.Burn time is 5 to 6 minutes using Imgburn at 12X

also - my disks are not dirty. i usually back up a brand new disk before it gets dirty :)

Laptop........You said a dirty word. Laptop drives are junk with few exceptions.Try using your external to rip and see what happens.Clean the disc first.

your current 25 minutes to rip time sound about right as it depends on how good a CPU you have to get faster rip times. My computer takes anywhere from 10 minutes to 25 minutes depending on how much compression is needed and I have a 1.89ghz dual core CPU and 4gb memory

Could be how much protection is on the media which will slow down the rips some also but I would go with the PIO first

Common Settings > General > change the Temporary Directory to your external hdd

You may still have better overall rips speeds by using your external ODD.
Typically, slimline burners are far less robust

Mine takes about 15 minutes to 25 minutes to rip depending on how much compression is needed and I'm running on a AMD Phenom 9150e Quad-Core Processor at 1.80GHz with 4.00 GB of RAM. I'd say 25 minutes is about right. I don't see how others are saying it's any faster then that seeing as most movies require a good amount of compression to rip down to DVD5.

As for burning it takes about 15 minutes to burn and another 5 to 10 minutes to verify the burn using IMGburn. That's cause I burn at the slowest speed of 4x for better results.

Don't try reading from a USB external optical drive with the temp file set to a USB hard drive. Same bottleneck problem. Try it using your internal optical drive first. If you want to try the external optical drive as a Source (read) drive, write the file to your internal hard drive or set the internal drive as the location for the temp file.

It would be good to know however, if your internal hdd and internal ODD are on the same controller.

I believe Img verification is enabled by default.
A burn log will tell the tale if you look...or just look at your settings.

I disagree with richmoral. I don't doubt what he gets for times, but his times are not typical for many users.

This rip time was pretty similar on my old build which was an XP Pro desktop...plain, old P4, 3.0 GHz, nothing fancy.
The limiting factor re: ripping is the ODD, for most users.

Where the new rig really shines is with Mobile conversions. I've gone from about 50fps to 500 fps...a full 10-fold increase.
This is strictly cpu-based as I always rip to the hdd prior to conversions.

Further to what Richmoral said, if he is burning at 4X, which he indicates is the slowest speed, he could be causing as many problems burning too slow as someone who burns too fast with cheap media...(but different results)

A good emulsion (as found on TY and Verbs), could be subject to 'overburn'... areas that should be burn free, dulled to the point of non-reflectivity by an extended burn on an adjacent area, resulting in mis-reads in a playback situation.

i have 16x taiyo yuden SL dvd+r - so i burn at 8x.

if i get 8x taiyo yuden SL dvd+r - should i burn at 4x??

With todays burners and good quality media you can still get good burns at a faster speed, I use Verbatim SL 16X and burn those at 12X and for DL 8X I burn at 6X but 1/2 speed is OK if you want but the only way to be sure is to experiment with the burn speeds as with todays good burners I don't believe the 1/2 speed is valid anymore, Just my thought on this :)

Last year I spent a lot of time and disc running test of burn speeds and running quality test on the results.

Verb 16X SL..

4X --- crap.
8X----good.
12X---excellent.
16X ----hit and miss quality with coasters thrown in.

I never recommend using half speed due to the results of my own testing.

Trying to give a one answer fits all, can get pretty dicey.

When folks post less than adequate details, like no MID, no burner make, model, firmware, no burn log, yada, yada, yada...
trying to suggest a one anwer fits all, is a lesson in frustration.
In these cases, I believe suggesting 1/2 the max speed is a reasonable starting point.

But, I totally agree with you guys. I don't use 1/2 max speed at all, but then again, I'm not just looking for a starting point.

For eg., with one of my Sony-Optiarc 7240s (mod firmware 1.01, bitsetting for +R, +RW, +R DL and rpc-1), I use the following auto set speeds with Img.

YUDEN000 T02 (8X +R) -----> burn @ 8X

MCC 004 (16X +R) ---------> burn @ 12X

MKM 001 (2.4-4X +R DL)----> burn @ 4X

MKM 003 (up to 10X) ------> burn @ 8X

Can I burn faster or slower?... sure, but these speeds yield perfect results for me and never cause problems.

There's no substitute for doing your own testing. There are are far too many variations in systems, settings and media.
No one should be attempting video archiving with crappy or marginal media anyway, but that's a whole 'nother story.
