3 months ago, I wrote a thread in the subreddit group titled "I'm finding myself using Streamfab less... and the competitor more..." (I do post under a different name on Reddit). You could consider it a rant if you will. But I expressed my views on Fab and what was the state of affairs at the time.
2 months ago, in the Anystream subreddit someone else started titled "In your experience, how does AnyStream compare to StreamFab or KeepStreams?" and I posted a reply with my feedback on the likes/dislikes of them.
I've considered posting them here too, but I still feel it more proper to mention other products as little as possible here. I know we've spoken of the StreamFab subreddit in another thread, but I will say since its not an official support channel, I do speak more freely about the Fox over there, and I'm more frank with my comparisons.
The other day, I posted more thoughts in the "what was the length of DRM crack time..." here.
There are some valid points scattered all over. For example:
- At this point, we know that there is at least one way Amazon DRM can be cracked/fix without the need for re-encode because the Fox has done it. If you follow their forums, Amazon is still making some small tweaks/changes that are having minor impacts, but for the most part, those too have been fixable, and very quickly.
- So its not unreasonable to expect FAB to have at least fixed DRM on theirs by now without the need for having to re-encode.
- Simple bugs still exist in StreamFab, at least if they can't fix DRM, fix the minor non-DRM related bugs that continue to plague it version to version.
- Not everyone has a state of the art computer. Even those who have recent/up to date hardware still see re-encoding as a drag and it extremely elongates the end to end downloading process. Its a Band-Aid and not a very good one. Something isn't always better than nothing.
- Even though as a user, lifetime license is preferred, annual licenses are a motivating factor for a company to keep improving and fixing things, especially if they want their customers to renew and pay again. Where as lifetime subscription they have your money, so there is less financial pressure to fix things. At the same time I have also wondered how a software company can keep paying for development and keeping the lights on, with lifetime licenses? What is their revenue stream?
Fab is lucky that the Fox only takes bitcoin, and that turns off many users, as does the 1 year and 2 year license. I was lucky to have bought in when they accepted credit cards and lifetime license. BUT even with the hassle of having to figure out Bitcoin and the like, I've seen many people jump the Fab ship. Even with their different approach/UI/workflow, I feel the more that try The Fox's app, the more will jump ship so they can download without the re-encoding step, without many of the bugs, and due to their faster fix times when bugs are found.
At that point, StreamFab will be done.
And this entire experience is going to impact DVDFab's over all reputation as well. How many potential new customers are going to look at this and feel good about purchasing other FAB products?
