Clearing “Temp Files” Feature Wiping Entire Drive?!

There is a Reddit post in the SF sub where 2 users reported that their temp drive got wiped after use of the feature.

I haven’t seen a post on the forum about this so I’m posting this here as a precautionary measure in case that’s a systematic issue in SF 7.

Anyone experienced the same issue? Is it a huge bug or just a user issue?

Users should refrain from changing temp folder location, but I know users do.
I have thought about changing it, to get it off the main C: drive, but have not yet done it, from the default C:\Users\username\Documents\DVDFab\StreamFab\Temp
Or %HOMEPATH%\Documents\DVDFab\StreamFab\Temp

The user on Reddit set it to H:/
So yeah, it can delete the entire H:/ drive.
If users want to change temp location, Using H: drive as an example, they should use something like H:\Streamfab\Temp
Then only contents of H:\Streamfab\Temp would get deleted.

We certainly do. Because the documents’ folder is a stupid place to put your temps. Especially if you are having a conflict with OneDrive, which is the original reason for changing the temp folder location. I’ve been using D:\AFAB_Temp as my temp folder since the day the change was allowed without any problem once.

Wilson, just to verify, you aren’t going to ask the dev to remove the ability to change the temp folder location, but to remove any possibility of using a root folder in a drive. Correct?

I’ve had that folder redirected out of my documents folder since before you could do in the app. It has no effect on the operations of the software.

You’re right. Actually it’s common sense when thinking about it. He selected the whole drive as the temp directory.

Just read it 4:30am so my common sense wasn’t awake yet to realize it’s a naive user issue by these 2 guys. I was worried this might be a huge issue with the new release. 🫣

Cats4U As the name suggests, my document folder contains documents, invoices and official papers, not junk from programs.

Well, since Jan 2025 when I setup new PC, I have a separate on board 10TB WDBLACK HDD setup as a ‘scapegoat’ drive for downloads, and hotspare backup of photoshop projects. This has custom drive letter (/:X) I created a temp folder called FAB and point my temp/cache folder at that. When I need to manually clear my cache/temp stuff I simply delete entire folder and make new one, or CTRL-A select all inside and delete. Bob’s your uncle, all sorted. I never use any “automated” tools to delete cache/temp aside from inside Chrome for web cache. Zero issues, as one would one expect, when using this method. :)

It would be better if streamfab could prevent users from using just drives, as cats4u said.
Like require a folder even if just something like H:\SFTEMP, if they don’t want H:\Streamfab\Temp.
Although currently when using clear temp it does skip the cache folder, so users don’t get logged out of services.
There is then also a clear cookie option, which I guess would do that.
Also, clear history does clear it in the program, but then if you close and open streamfab again the history comes back.
For me, not much of an issue currently, but I do see the history growing each day.

I have said in the past I never did and will never use MS OneDrive and YES it’s been talked about before those who use it, it will cause conflicts if they use the default to documents folder in Streamfab.
I am considering moving to a different drive only to get it all off C: drive as well as get it away from the document’s folder. I tend to put things off lately, as for now the program works.

We all know it can work, as above simchris has done it for a long time with no issues.

As I said I do get that many change the locations.
I am currently deciding what drive of mine I may change to.
It did not seem many did, as it wouid get asked alot where is temp folder, if they are told to either delete the contents of temp folder or cache. If they moved it no need to ask where it is they should know.
It does look more like they need to be directed to their settings to find the temp folder and log folder.
And telling them %HOMEPATH%\Documents\DVDFab\StreamFab\Temp won’t get them to the temp folder, if moved.

When V7 was being worked on, it was one of the suggestions for streamfab to change from documents folder location.

I made for myself simple CMD file to start StreamFab to delete certain folders before start SF

rmdir /S /Q “%HOMEPATH%\Documents\DVDFab\StreamFab\Temp\Log”
rmdir /S /Q “%HOMEPATH%\Documents\DVDFab\StreamFab\Temp\MetaPicture”
rmdir /S /Q “%HOMEPATH%\Documents\DVDFab\StreamFab\Temp\outputTemp”
START "" “C:\Program Files\DVDFab\StreamFab\StreamFab64.exe”

Some apps auto-create default directories, no matter what path you give them. That behavior should be modeled here.
If I went to drive E as a destination for the time files, it should then create folders \dvdfab\streamfab\ and then the appropriate subfolders from there.
Why would you want all those random files on a root directory?
