StreamFab not truly shutting down

As I previously wrote Here —
Exit StreamFab. Load up a Task or Process Manager, and terminate every StreamFab-related program/process that is still running in the background. Possible processes still running are StreamFab64.exe, QCef.exe, YoutubeToMP3Process.exe, or YoutubeToMP3Service.exe. There might be others found at C:\Program Files\DVDFab\StreamFab that are still running, but I haven’t seen them. Make sure you terminate all that are still running, no matter how many times they appear. For reasons unknown, SF is sometimes not closing all processes lately when the program itself is exited. This is causing lockups and crashes. A long time ago, it was just QCef.exe that caused this problem. That was eventually fixed, but now it is back, and it is including other SF program/processes as well. @Wilson.Wang, you might want to have the developer look into this.

Again, StreamFab appeared to be completely off after exiting the program. But a quick look at the Task Manager shows that it continued to run, using up memory and CPU power.

The developer needs to look into this memory leak and unnecessary CPU usage.

This isn’t about uninstalling. This is about closing the app after you are done with a session. A normal belief with StreamFab (and all other programs) is that after you click the X and tell it to close/exit, it is removed from memory and is not being processed in any way by the CPU. As best I can tell, this problem only started early in the 7 series, perhaps as far back as 7.0.0.0. It did not happen with the 6 series.

By the way, I am probably the biggest advocate on this forum for doing clean installs when doing an update. I was the one who wrote the Sticky on how to do a clean install at the top section of this forum. A clean install is a good thing, but it has nothing to do with this problem.

Did the “system behavior” under settings get changed from Exit the Program to Minimize to System Try by chance?

No, it didn’t. When I say “exit/close,” that’s what I mean. Nothing on the desktop indicates it is running. Nothing in the taskbar, hidden or otherwise, directly indicates it is running. The way I discovered that there was a problem was that I have a little taskbar indicator, part of Process Lasso, that shows CPU activity. It would become pinned at about 25% or so after closing StreamFab. That’s when I brought up Process Lasso and Windows Task Manager and saw that processes from StreamFab were still running and eating up CPU and memory.
I’ve been working with computers since 1973 and with Windows since Windows 3.0 (roughly 1993). I know what I’m talking about. It would be very easy for all to run a test and see the same results. Simply fully close SF and check the processes still being run. I’m not as interested in you being enlightened to the problem as I am, the developer. Memory leaks can lead to slowdowns, freezes, and crashes.

Cats4U I confirm this. Exited program and there were still 2 processes running in task manager. Could not re start SF until I ended those tasks.

I tested streamfab by watching Process Manager, when closing it closes all processes in streamfab.
I think you have windows cabbage.
Try reinstalling Windows, and then test streamfab.

Use StreamFab 7.0.0.8, windows 11

Ahh, no, that’s not going to happen. If there is cabbage, it’s in SF’s garden.

This behavior has been noticed by other users as well. Background processes continuing after exit can definitely explain random crashes and higher CPU usage. It would help if the development team reviewed how StreamFab handles process cleanup on shutdown.

I knew something was going on, and that is why I uninstall SF and then install new updates.
Doing an uninstall; if all files are not gone, then I know it’s still running as a process.
I have been doing that since V7 came. I usually can just do an install from the offline installer.
As I felt the running processes, if they were running, stop a direct update from the offline installer.

SF could do something simple like a PowerShell script. And then add to that the other running processes.
Stop-Process -Name “StreamFab64” -Force
Stop-Process -Name “QCef” -Force

Stan001 are you having issues with it lately? Mine doesn’t shut down as well, but it also downloads a single episode and then gums up my network controller. My computer then hangs on all network requests. It doesn’t fail, just hangs there until I disable/enable the controller. Happens after every file. System works normally otherwise outside of when I’m using Streamfab. It isn’t my windows firewall either. Has been working just fine up until late last night., which would have been after the last update.

for me, when I hit the x to exit Streamfab, it closes. Nothing listed in task manager for it. Occasionally CEF takes a minute or two to close down when exiting SF.

If all else fails, run these two commands as admin and see if either finds/fixes issues:

sfc /scannow
dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Ideally you want SFC to find no integrity violations, and DISM to just report that the operation completed successfully.

Note: DISM can sometimes appear to hang (progress bar stops) in the 60-70% range, this is normal even when you don’t have issues.

+1 …. I run SFC/ scannow every Monday morning when I boot up, along with checking Chrome for security updates and my network Bitdefender panel for any notable attacks/probes.

We all have to be sysops these days 🙂 (#NERD!)

I did want to add I still am not 100% sure it’s all SF, although the V7 installer is much different than V6.
So I don’t know what the V7 installer is doing. The V6 installer was simpler.
I have seen new issues pop up with Windows 11 Pro updates as well.

I do have saved to run in a command prompt as admin
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth && SFC /scannow
I have seen Dism need to repair the image as well as SFC come up with integrity errors, although not in the last month.

I do sometimes even run a chkdsk /f and then reboot.
This, I find many times, finds no issues.

SFC and DISM are good maintenance procedures, but they involve corrupt or missing system files. They have nothing to do with a developer not shutting down all background processes when a program is exited.

As far as I’m concerned, this thread can be locked by one of the numerous Trusted. The only opinions and actions that I hope for will come from the developer.

It definitely needs to be addressed.
And yes, DISM and SFC have no effect on the process not terminated.

As I said, I had issues even installing from the offline downloader; it seems to be related.

It’s a crappy temp fix, but I do use this from PowerShell as admin:

Stop-Process -Name “QCef” -Force

It was either that or reboot before uninstalling old version of SF and installing the latest.
The 2 commands do show an error if the processes are already terminated, but that’s minor.
