[7022] Not picking up DD5.1 at all

First: well done on cracking a way to achieve this!.. but there’s always a however, of course, having something is better than nothing, but we’re currently stuck with (HE-)AAC Stereo and Atmos (if that’s offered). Most (if not all) offer AC-3 (cf. E-AC-3) in 5.1 surround and it seem the selection dialogue box only presents AAC or Atmos (if the latter’s available). @Wilson.Wang could you ask the dev to look into that?

Also, despite selecting AAC and de-selecting HE-AACv2, or even selectin both, SF downloads HE-AACv2 regardless (both tracks are HE-AACv2 in the latter case)…

When I download 2.0 audio it ends up with / with he aac and another audio codec. Also for stereo why is it show 1 channel as original and 2 channels as usable?

The only thing you accomplish by starting a new thread is a high chance of missing out on an interim release that fixes the problem (those are usually posted in the original thread for people to try out before the fix makes it into the proper release) 🙄

See the other thread today on this topic. It’s an issue with the initial support for purchases. I posted example from my download of a 5.1 series in 2.0; pulled info from mediainfo.

This thread will likely get merged with existing thread(s) on the new ATV+ purchases download option, and limitations at the moment (no 5.1).

I have to disagree with this. It is not behaving that way - at least for me.

Here is what is happening.

Anything I analyze for Apple TV+ defaults to H264/AAC (ignores my preferences)

However, I’m able to choose the correct options and it downloads correctly

** doesn’t matter if I choose SDR, HDR10 or DV, it correctly downloads 5.1 audio

I’m in US, currently have Proton VPN turned off, have not yet cleared my cache or went into settings to see if my ATV+ configuration had been altered because of the big changes to this module. That’s next. This was my before test.

AnttDvdFab Dolby Digital with Atmos is not the same as plain AC-3. If you go back to 7021 and pick an ATV title, you’ll get a choice of Atmos, AC-3, and AAC; with 7022 you get Atmos, and AAC (and from my experiments with purchased titles, AAC downloads HE-AACv2 no matter what kind of AAC you choose)

Gotcha. I missed that distinction as I don’t think anyone posted an image of what they expected to see. Atmos is (subjectively) a superset of DD+ 5.1, so I assumed it didn’t matter which kind of DD+ 5.1 was retrieved. 😄

However, I’m having a senior moment. Weren’t there settings for ATV+ in the Preferences dialog before this update. I swear I was always frustrated because the analysis dialog popped up with AAC defaulted and I had to manually switch to the setting I had configured.

AnttDvdFab I don’t think there ever was an ATV preferences panel, and I went back to earlier versions, and it seems the previous versions erroneously are also getting HE-AACv2 even when plain AAC is selected.

Back to DD5.1, “technically” you’d not need plain AC-3 if you have Atmos, as the latter coding was designed to be an enhancement of E-AC-3, which itself was an enhancement of AC-3, so Atmos would fall back to E-AC-3 if you couldn’t decode Atmos, and E-AC-3 would fall back to AC-3 if you couldn’t decode E-AC-3… so for regular ATV it’s not a problem… However, for purchased titles, often you’d get a choice of either AAC or AC-3, and with AC-3 missing, currently you’re effectively stuck with tortured HE-AACv2… and the fact that AC-3 is missing from regular ATV titles hints that something major changed on SF front.

Sounds good (fun intended), and you are right. I don’t think I’ve ever got anything but HE AAC on the rare occasions that was the only offer with ATV+. When that becomes the only available choice, it is painful.

I see the issue now. I hadn’t tried TV shows or movies that don’t come with Atmos as a choice, but I found some now. I was confused why getting Atmos but not AC-3 was such a big deal.

I don’t mind so much that some titles lack DD 5.1, but when the only soundtrack is AAC 2.0 at the extremely low bitrate of 32 kbps, that’s pretty useless…

Mollenoh Yeah; without the “good” audio 5.1 or Atmos, useless to me at all. But great first step. Not sure technical limitations.

simchris The problem is that SF is not even downloading the more decent AAC soundtrack regardless of what you select, and it seems this was a problem in the earlier versions too, just nobody picked up on in (guessing people only downloaded Atmos for ATV)

0xFeedBeef Yeah, I always get DV+Atmos for Apple content. My whole system is optimized for DV and Atmos. I only suffer stereo if it’s an old TV show, fringe movie, found on other platforms.
