these two are mutually exclusive: Without analysis you can’t get a result

(modified yt-dlp) - all newer releases use yt-dlp unchanged.

7025 use yt-dlp_2026.03.17 after that yt-dlp_2026.06.09

@Germania Did it work earlier because SF versions before 7.0.2.5 used their own modified YouTube Downloader and not yt-dlp? It must mean that the modified version supported encrypted content? Something that “normal” yt-dlp doesn’t.

@xjock4ever In the meantime until MPD Downloader is updated by SF devs to work correctly with TLC paid content, you must use 7.0.2.4 for download encrypted videos from TLC.

Germania I noticed that if I try to download using MPD, the audio works but the video freezes; this has been happening since version 7.0.25—the last version that worked properly—and since then, downloads from go.tlc.com haven’t been working correctly.

I used the new 7038, and I also used MKV (MKVToolNix) and the episode played fine.

Also check what player you use; I always use VLC player

yt-dlp claims to still support TLC, so it just might be SF that wants to use the DRM MPD downloader.
I also see it was the only clickable option in SF.

As previously mentioned, I cannot test TLC myself,
but the isolated cases where playback issues occurred
could usually be resolved by changing the “Video Format”
(ffmpeg vs. mkvmerge) provided, of course,
that all segments downloaded without errors (see log)

Tested now with MPD for https://go.tlc.com/video/baylen-out-loud-censored-tlc-atve-us/going-for-narnia using mkv (mkvtoolnix). Here the sound ends after 41mn 43s while video is 1h 13mn.

~~I understand now it fails because it’s a free video with ads. MPD module will fail for free videos no matter if selecting mp4 or mkv.~~ No, it doesn’t, sorry for mixing things up. As I wrote for S01E02 earlier that episode did download correctly (same length for video+audio) using MPD. So it seems some free episodes are working correctly using MPD and some other are failing.

I answer my own question now after test. If I select mkv here I get mp4 anyway at TLC. But if select mkv (mkvtoolnix) at “VIP” I get mkv using mkvtoolnix at TLC.

This is strange, because DRM MPD Downloader is not a VIP module. So why doesn’t SF use mkv when I select it in non-VIP list? Or does SF only use the setting for mp4/mkv(ffmpeg)/mkv(mkvtoolnix) in VIP for everything and ignore the universal mp4/mkv setting for sites like TLC? I’m confused. 🤔

Hi Stan. Can you test that video from OP https://go.tlc.com/video/jay-pamela-tlc-atve-us/risk-it-for-a-biscuit again but this time using mp4 as video format? I’m just curious if it works correctly for you. Check if audio have the same length as video after download.

At TLC I tested with https://go.tlc.com/video/baylen-out-loud-censored-tlc-atve-us/i-have-tourettes-stupid that doesn’t require login. Worked fine to download with YT Downloader.

• 7.0.3.8 beta.
• VPN with US IP.
• Worked with YouTube Downloader. With DRM MPD Downloader the downloaded video is only 15mn 11s.

I get the same result with mpd downloader

And with paid content there are no ads - so this should not affected ..
.. and SF offer only DRM Downloader for this, because
untouched yt-dlp don’t support encrypted content

ERGO: free content works with YT DL fine ..
.. and paid (encrypted) content with DRM DL with Video Format mkv(mkvtoolnix)

I don’t understand why a working method shouldn’t be sufficient.

For Universal Downloader there’s no option in SF for “mkv (mkvtoolnix)”. It only exist for VIP. If using Universal Downloader, does the option mkv then means ffmpeg or mkvtoolnix? I have actually never tested that, I always use mp4.

If you’ve read the previous posts, you know that
mkv(mkvtoolnix) resolves the issue with encrypted content.

However, for me that has absolutely no effect on the problem with ads
in ad-supported (unencrypted) videos - so YT DL is required (only) for this

Yes, I get that too when downloading 1080p. But when I tested yesterday (and now once again to be sure) I tested with 360p. Then it’s full video + audio.

Yes, but maybe it’s working with mp4 too because that video is paid/no ads. I can’t test https://go.tlc.com/video/jay-pamela-tlc-atve-us/risk-it-for-a-biscuit myself either, so I hope @Stan001 can test it. It would be interesting to know if it works correct with mp4 too.

I was wrong; mkv won’t play past a certain point.

Same for MP4.

That episode is DRM, so there’s no way to try it as extensions balk at DRM and yt-dlp can’t handle DRM.

That brings us back to the OP problem ..

To understand why both downloaders behave so differently,
I took a closer look ..

DRM DL use ../dash_clear_fmp4/master.mpd (with multiple periods/breaks)
YT DL use ../hls_clear_ts/../master.m3u8

And the encrypted content might only be offered in MPD format

Correct, that is exactly what it was adapted for ..
And everyone complained whenever YT changed something and a new version
wasn’t available in SF on the same day as the yt-dlp release.

I can confirm 7025 works; I only tried mkv format.

I also cannot say that the extensions are right; they told me DRM on another site, yet yt-dlp worked.
I say this because the extensions won’t get from tbs.com and some say DRM, yet yt-dlp works fine on tbs.com movies

Due to the format of TLC, I am not up to trying yt-dlp direct command line for TLC.

ADDED: After checking with TubeDigger, it is not DRM; TLC breaks it up into multiple mp4 files.
So with TubeDigger I could not manage the full-length show.
