Fake/Corrupted Subtitles on Amazon?

Hey there,

I am running the latest Emby Server 4.9.5.0 as my media server and while configuring and testing a reverse proxy setup using caddy, I ran into problems. Emby failed on hardware transcoding resulting in lagging streams after around 3 minutes.

By accident I found out that this was due to embedded forced subtitles in those movies which I recently downloaded from Amazon DE with Streamfab .41. To name two of the movies, they would be Masters of the Universe (2026) and Life after fighting. Removing the subtitles from the files fixes the issue on Emby immediately. Files with legit (forced) subtitles work just fine as well.

Trying to extract the subtitles from said movies to see what’s up by using https://subtitlekit.com/en/extract-subtitles-from-video/ gives me “file corrupted” messages.

Is there a problem with StreamFab with (forced) subtitles or is Amazon trolling Emby users?

Can anyone confirm? Or relate?

I can’t test or say anthing about Emby ..
.. but perhaps it has something to do with long pauses between two texts => see here
Consequently, the video format could be decisive:

You could try remuxing subs using the video format mkv(MKVToolNix)

This is not a StreamFab problem. It is a known issue with ffmpeg and embedded text in mp4.
If you have forced subtitles with large gaps, then use MKV or external SRT.

I have tried remuxing these files in Avidemux, XMedia Recode and VLC (not MKVToolNix though) to no avail. The actual result was, that the forced subtitles weren’t used by default anymore. The subs were still there but I had to activate them manually, which resulted in a lagging stream again.

I have asked AI (which might be hallucinating ofc) if the movies I have mentioned have forced subtitles for german streams and it said, that they don’t. If I start these movies on Prime and try to set subtitles accordingly, they just offer the regular full subtitles. Yet, Streamfab offers to download with forced subs (which might not even be there?).

If I try to extract the subs, subtitlekit.com says that the file would be corrupted. Loading working movies with forced subs which I downloaded from Prime into subtitlekit (let’s say True Confessions), the tool extracts the subs just fine.

I am not at home atm and might try MKVToolNix later, but I think something could be off.

Can anyone verify/confirm that Masters of the Universe 2026 has actually valid forced subtitles?

I tried three times with forced german subtitles from amazon.de:

mp4 + Extract Original (my default)
remux in mp4 (ffmpeg)
remux in mkv(mkvtoolnix)

There are only 4 entries:

With remux in mp4 the last entry is wrong timed - like described in linked topic

With remux in mkv using mkvmerge it’s correct
