What BluRay Equipment Do I need?

1st I'm a newbie to bluray, so be gentle.
I saw somewhere that I could backup a bluray disk to hd using an non-bluray drive. That doesn't make sense to me.
Is this true, or do I need a blueray drive?
Is there a bluray player that can function as a drive to backup?
I was think of getting a 2TB storage drive for backups.
Is that practical alternative to buying discs?

I swear I saw some youtube dude who said he was using a DVD-rw drive to read a bluray.
I can't find it now, and I know it's counter-intuitive if just not wrong.
I just want to be sure I need a bluray drive or maybe a bluray player with a pc connection.

it's not true, and you do need Blu-ray drive

No, but look at this as an opportunity to create one

Good idea, good alternative... size is depending on number of movies and format/compression (i.e. I have 10TB storage and somewhat comfortable)
