DVD player says "This disc is not formatted for this region"

Tried the copies in another DVD player and all of them played. The player is 6-7 years old so I wouldn't mind getting another. However, is it odd that the copies do not play but the originals do? In other words, it doesn't appear that the player has completely failed but has just decided in the past week that it will play copies made in the past but not newly made copies.

It still may not be your player that's at fault. The DVD burner in your laptop could still be at issue as others have suggested. I had a DVD/CD combo drive that burnt playable DVDs and CDs when new. However, after about two months of operation burning several discs per week, the CD burner started flaking out with some intermittent burnt CD-Rs that would not play in certain players. Looking at the faulty burnt discs, it was obvious that the motor tracking mechanism for the CD burn laser was failing. The created tracks were no longer concentric--probably sometimes so bad that they're out of spec--so that certain players were simply unable to track and play the discs properly. This got worst over time until eventually all burnt CD-R were unreadable while burning of DVDs continued to work just fine. Long story short, it just goes to show that burners could go out of spec--especially when stressed and overheated. The original discs are typically manufactured and burnt under tighter specs. Just a thought to consider...

It has happened to me and I went out purchased a new DVD player and 6 months later the one that wouldn't work worked again.

AGJ is totally correct. Laptop drives, especially matSHITa, have always been problematic and I too would recommend a good quality external burner.

From what I can remember of your problem, have you tried the discs in another set top player. If not, I would do this before purchasing another drive.

I tried to find another thread where a member had a similar problem with a laptop that had a matshita drive in it but I am unable to find it. This member tried an external DVD drive and it finally worked for her so I figured I would mention that for you but the drives are not cheap just so you know and we can not guarantee that it will work for you as well

Is this a new computer? Anyway the DVD drive installed that I quoted and is in bold is your problem. MatSHITa drives are the worst to use and they have region code issues as well for DVD back up programs. Try an external DVD Drive as that would probably fix the problem. Also laptops are not meant to burn DVD movies as they get too hot

The computer is about 3 months old and it is a laptop. It seems like if the drive is as bad as you say I would have had issues previously. I was able to burn literally over 100 discs flawlessly. You would guess there would be at least a few duds in there. Is it common for a drive to perform without issue like that and then suddenly quit? I would rather not have to buy another drive unless it is necessary. Also, I am relatively sensitive to my computer overheating and have never noticed a substantial change in temperature while using the drive.

BTW, no one caught my post about setting write speed for ImgBurn after the op posted a VSO burn log. So with that said if you rather use VSO set the write speed for it within Fab's common settings. (This day has not started off well for me so I'm buggering back off to bed and will try a fresh start later)

set the burn speed to half of your media, I know you're using good old verbatims but honestly that drive I suspect is your problem or part of it.

Still test those problem dvds in another stand alone player but my money is on the drive is failing and/or write speed. That drive is in a lappy yes? you most likely will need to purchase a external type for use with your laptop. I think your problems will disappear after that. Please watch Troy512's video again on how to set the write speed per mid/disc ID and never try to burn at max speed.

Also the disc that failed to play on your stand alone, will they play on your computer? Let Fab try to open one of those failed disc and if it will click the check mark for common settings and copy and paste the info displayed there.
