DFab unable to overcome structural DVD copy protection ?

    Hi there,

I have use DVDFab most of the time to backup / convert my BDs but now and then I also rip DVDs with it.

For nearly all DVDs I ripped DVDFab worked without hickup. Now friends have asked me to make them a backup of a DVD produced for them during a cruise they did last year. This is understandable since the DVD itself does not look THAT high quality and has some high emotional value for them.

The copy protection I run into seems to be similar to ARccOS Protection (corrupt parts on the DVD which are omitted during playback) but also included corrupt navigation information inside VOBs as well as a corrupt filesystem on the DVD (there seem to be 100GB of VOB files on the DVD ).

DVDFab failed to open the original DVD claiming the media is corrupt. Almost all other commercial product (beside the one with the fox) also bomb out.

I was able to rip the content of the DVD to HD with dvdbackup (a Linux tool) but one ends up with 100GB of VOB file with identical content on HDD

dd_rescue came to the help and could simply rip the DVD to an ISO of reasonable size which I could burn. The resulting copy worked like a charm.

When I try to open the ISO generated by dd_rescue with DVDFab it still claims the media is corrupt.

Extracting the ISO with a tool of your choice (e.g. 7Zip) result in the mentioned 100GB of VOB files.

This is really a funny copy protection. I was close to "rip" the content to separate files with MPlayer and re-master them to a new DVD without protection.

Let me know if you need more infos to evaluate this issue. The ISO generated by dd_rescue has no corrupt sectors in it anymore since dd_rescue fills them up with zeros. So my educated guess is that DVDFab (and other tools as well) run into issues when either parsing corrupt VOB infos, the corrupt file system or both ?

I can not crosscheck with the product that has a fox as icon since I had it installed for evaluation a year back then. So re-installation is not possible.
Sources in the www indicate that the "Rip DVD to HDD" seem to work with the DVD mentioned above.

    TIA,
    D$

Geesh, you sure rolled up your sleeves on this one.
By any chance have you tried to open the dd_rescue .iso with Img...not within Fab, but directly with Img?...

You've probably tried these apps too and I haven't tried them in years, but...
    ISOBuster may be helpful.

Another shot in the dark that may offer some success is the old, reliable dvd decrypter developed by LIGHTNING UK! or dvd shrink.
If no dice, then you might try running Fab Passkey simultaneously.
I know this is not recommended, but it's worked for me maybe 2-3 times in the last 10 or so years...lol

You might also try disabling all the copy protection tools...say in dvd decrypter and again, let Passkey run in the background.

Other "shots" might include using an older version of Fab...such as 4.1.2.0
(one of my favorites) and also tinkering in
Common Settings...tick ignore all reading errors automatically
(this may result in copying bad sectors, but may in fact result in a usable copy)

    Also disable read-ahead cache.

That's about it for me re: this particular "stream of consciousness" moment...lol

    Best of luck
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Thanks for your reply ! DVDDecrypter was in fact my first try on this one. Unfortunately Lightning UK received a take-down notice for his tool when the first ARccOS DVD where released

So DVDDecrypter is somewhat more sensitive to newer corrupted DVDs. This was the case with my DVD as well. I also tested RipIt4Me which combines DVDDecrypter and FixVTS but this died during processing as well !

I did not post in the first place to get the DVD copied but to hear the replies from the DVDFab stuff since this really is the first DVD I came across which DVDFab could not copy.

As for PassKey I honestly have not tried....

Why not post a log from a reading try with the latest version of DVDFab?

They both say what I mentioned: "Failed to open"

This being said I will need to return the DVD to our friends but keep the ISO for further evaluation....

I figured that you had pretty much tried "everything"...

I'd still try dvd decrypter with all of its copy protection tools...both enabled and disabled...and run Passkey in the background...it'll operate the same as the red fox...as a Windoz driver in the background since the fox is no longer an option for you.

Do you have Fab v.4120?...it may do better handling the oddball authoring of the DVD.
Try the same here too...right out of the box and again, try disabling all the copy protection tools and run Passkey...which will be a utd decrypter.

If you need 4120, just drop me a pm with your email and I'll hook you up.
It'll come via gmail and since executable files will be rejected....I'll just change the file ext to nonsense...eg., .exx
Just change it to .exe so Windoz will recognize and run it.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Have you tried "Clone"? I've used it to copy some weird stuff bit for bit to a like sized blank.

                @maineman:
*ggg*...yes, I tried pretty much everything ! As in earlier times I consider this as a sport
...although I tough SD material only rarely anymore...

Thanks for the offer about the old version of Fab but I guess I stay with the new version since I played nicely for me.

@90312: Nope, the point is that I can not even add neither ISO nor DVD as source.

Just to make it clear: I could copy the DVD and produce a working backup. The question for is though why all other tools than dd_rescue failed ?

I suspect that the modified file table is the reason for this...I mean the kind of modification which also makes the DVD over 100GB big if you have a look that the properties in the the Windows explorer. dd_rescue works on block device level rather then trying interpreting / parsing the filestructure / logical VOB structure but in the end I am not an expert !

Purhaps you should start with finding out what Cruise line they went on and if this was a service of the Cruise line or an independent video shop on board the ship. If it was an independent, you'll want to see if they remember the name or the name of the ship in particular and possibly the service.

The reason I say this is so you can first find out what information you can about the service, then google the service itself. The next step would be to google for any information on said DVD copy protection that they use.

One of the other online forums or sites might have this information. the key is in finding it.

If anything, this might just be a way of saving you some major headaches.

Thanks for your posting ! Honestly I already had some major headaches

Main purpose of this thread was not that I could not rip the DVD but to point out a possibly new DVD protection and asking for some feedback of the DVDFab folks....

The way I'm looking at it is if this is a form of protection unknown to DVDFab, then if you can locate any information on the protection used this would be a starting point for the DVDFab team to work with.

This would also mean fewer headaches for you the next time you encounter such should you ever get any more requests to duplicate "personal" videos containing this type of protection providing the DVDFab Team can overcome this type of protection.
