Repeated Problem of DVDFab Freezing and Never Finishing My Backups

    Hello,
I have been been using DVDFab (both v9.1.6.3 and v9.1.6.4) and I have had a serious problem occur where my attempt to copy my DVD fails. This failure happens quite alot (about 25% of the time). I don't know if it's my computer, my DVDFab settings, or if there is some other problem. I even updated my DVDFab to v9.1.6.4 this morning and the first DVD I tried to backup also failed.

    Here is the problem:
I use DVDFab to backup my DVDs to my laptop hard drive in a VIDEO_TS folder. I set DVDFab to make a Full Disc copy and I start the program. 75% of the time, DVDFab works perfectly and it gives me the message that the copy was "Successful". However, about 25% of the time, DVDFab fails. The program appears to work normally until it is almost at the end of the copying process. However, instead of stopping and giving me the message that the copying was successful, it freezes. DVDFab freezes and no matter what button I push on the interface, nothing happens. I have to go to the "Task Manager" to manually close the DVDFab program otherwise, it wouldn't even close. After I close DVDFab, when I restart the program to make my backup, it does work successfully. But I dislike having to redo the copying process about 25% of the time DVDFab fails so I would like to find out what may be the cause of this issue and fix it.

I will attach the log files of the most recent failed attempt to backup one of my DVDs. The DVD I tried to backup is called The Clowns and was directed by Fellini and released on DVD in 2011 so DVDFab can easily make the backup copy. I just want to know why it froze in this case so I can stop it from happening in the future. Thank you.
    Al

Is this the Criterion Collection version of Clowns? Do I understand you to say that if you try this same disc again, say in two days it might work?

      Signals,

Thanks for your reply. The Clowns DVD that I am using is not the Criterion version. The Clowns DVD that I am trying to backup is from a company called Rarovideo and it was released in March 2011. Here is the Amazon product page for your reference:

But I don't think the problem is the DVD itself or its copy protection - this freezing problem has occurred several times with different DVD companies.

After I manually close the frozen DVDFab program using the Task Manager, I immediately restart DVDFab and instruct the program to make a backup copy exactly as I did before. Everytime I have done this, DVDFab has always worked the second time and successfully made the backup copy. I have no doubt that DVDFab will continue to work to backup my DVDs. As I said before, the only problem is about 25% of the time, it freezes and I have to manually shut down DVDFab and restart the entire backup process again which takes time and is frustrating.

Do you think it might be a problem with my laptop or the settings on my computer or DVDFab? It's odd that this problem keeps happening only 25% of the time and it always works when I restart DVDFab a second time.

It you or anyone in the forum has any ideas, I will appreciate it.
      Thank you.

I would like to add one more thing. I just tried to make a backup copy of the Clowns DVD again and this time DVDFab worked perfectly. Do you think the problem could be how I'm using my laptop and DVDFab together? For example, I use Google Chrome to surf the web and I sometimes leave alot of webpages open at once (which can use alot of my laptop's memory). Also, sometimes I am also downloading video files at the same time that DVDFab is making a backup copy. Do you think this might be the reason, DVDFab is freezing up on me at random? Thank you.

Here is the log file for the second, successful backup copy of the Clown:

Since the program works when it does work I'm leaning towards a flaky memory chip. Sometimes the same bit of information will be written to adjacent cells which will cause intermittent freeze or failure. Here is a link to the free copy of memtest386, the best free program to detect this type of failure. Download the bootable CD iso and burn, it will not require the OS. Really stress the memory, maybe overnight to sniff these guys out.

And yes multitasking while making a backup is never a good idea.

I also recommend no multitasking when working with video, it is asking for trouble. Could also be heat related, especially if you have other things going on.

                  Hi,

From your details and log file, the same movie is copied fine at the second time, so that it should not be the copy function issue, it's possible to be DVDFab UI issue that the process bar does not refresh with some reasons.

Would you please help us to verify the issue?

Please don't close DVDFab when you have the issue again, and help us to check something:
                  - Please goto the target folder and check the outputted video size, the file size will not have any change if the copy process is stopped really.
                  - Please move DVDFab window when the process stopped. Move window will refresh the process bar.

                  Thanks!
