DVD5 Too Big

In the past when I've used copy (previous versions) to rip a DVD9 movie and compress it to a DVD5, everything has worked fine. I would rip and compress and save to an .iso file, and use separate burning software to do the actual burn. Lately, when I try the same process, the .iso files end up slightly too large to fit on a single layer DVD. Is there a setting which changed somewhere which now makes the DVD5 slightly too large?

I'm assuming that you ripped the DVD9 to the harddrive first.
I always rip to DVD compliant folders .
The use that to compress to DVD5.
I would also do this to the harddrive & then burn with ImgBurn.

In Common Settings/Drives/DVD Write "Wrtie Media (DVD-5 size)"
The 4300 MB setting should always work.
I would use a Custom Setting of 4464 MB.
The 4482 MB or 4488 MB should work but it's possible they might create an .iso too large.

I did this with the custom 4464 MB . The resulting .iso is 4.33GB which should work on a single layer DVD.

The one I tried with 4482 MB is right on 4.7GB the size of most single layer DVDs.
That should be 4700MB the .iso I created in actually 4,700,438,528 bytes .
So technically a little less than 1/2 MB over.
I will test it to a DVD +RW.

I tried burning the .iso that was created using the 4482 MB setting.
ImgBurn gave me this warning below as a thumbnail.

I answered Yes to both .
On separate burns of course.
To a DVD +RW single layer DVD.
The overburn had an error from ImgBurn .
It did play the movie but at the end while the credits were running it froze.
The truncated burn didn't show an error but did the same thing.
To me they were unsuccessful but could be used in a pinch.
So try a custom size like I posted or stick with the default 4300MB.

This bit can be confusing, disc manufacturers use base 10 math and computers use binary math. 4.7 billion bytes would be 4482.269 MB usable space for a computer.

I do the best I know how to figure the difference but I do rely on what Windows shows in Properties for folder size. To a point anyway.
ImgBurn read the .iso I created with DVDFab DVD Copy from one of the default as oversized. That was the 4482MB for DVD +R in the dropdown menu.

The 4464 custom setting worked correctly.

I believe the reason I haven't had a problem before is I was testing this to answer the OP.
I always burn from a DVD compliant folder.
With ImgBurn using Build mode.
I learned to do it that way.
