After reading many posts about ripping Avatar BD with subpicture/subtitle problems, I wanted to document my experience. In short, it seems that with the latest release (8.1.2.0), bluray ripping has issues with Avatar subs when attempting to rip to anything other than an MKV container file.
For my personal setup, I stream from external HDDs to various media players within my house such as the PS3, WD Live Plus, etc. I want to end up with .m2ts (h.264 with ac3) files since these are streamable/playable by all of my boxes, no transcoding needed. I do have to use a demux/convert/remux tool for the audio (DTS-HD to AC3) if I rip to .m2ts, but I also have to demux/remux the .mkv to .m2ts if I rip to .mkv, so that's a wash. But since Avatar was in h.264 and not vc-1 format, I tried for a while to get .m2ts rips to work with no success (never got the subs to be included into the file). I would never see the subs in any player on my pc neither such as VLC, WMP, etc.
My A/V Codec settings are all set to Software and 'Disable GPU codecs' is checked. I first use BD Copy to my internal HDD prior to ripping (mkv.h264.ac3). I then point the BD Ripper to the copy on my internal HDD. For my Avatar BD, the 'forced on' Navi subs are mixed in with the 'forced off' CC subs within the only English subs listed. I would check the English subs, and the 'Display Forced ON Only' box as well. Under the Conversion Settings, I would set 'Direct render to video' for the subs. THIS ONLY WORKS FOR RIPPING TO .MKV AND NOT TO .M2TS.
From all of the other discussions, it sounds to me this may also hold true for many other ripping profiles otherr than m2ts. It also failed for me trying to extract the subs to idx/sub files adding another stream to the file.
Just thought this may be helpful to someone else, because I could not understand how others got theirs to work from other posts. This was my solution, copy to HDD, rip to mkv.h264.ac3 with 'display forced on only' and ''direct render to video', then use another 3rd party tool to demux/remux from .mkv to .m2ts.
