I finally figured out my issue with forced subtitles for all my movies except one: Avatar. Has anyone successfully ripped a Blu-ray of Avatar with the forced subtitles? If so could you please tell me what format you used? avi, mp4, wma, ect. and which stream? I've tried just about every stream and audio combination as well as avi, mtk, mp4 and wma and I still can not get the forced subtitles to show up.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I made an MP4 of Avatar when it first came out and they worked, even had the script-like font. If this is the new "extended" version, it may be authored differently.

This is the new boxed extended version. Is there any way of tracking down the subtitles for blu-rays?

Let DVDFab analyze it in Blu-ray Ripper mode. It should identify any stream where it finds forced subs. If they do not show up in the GUI, check the internal log as well.

I did the Extended version released here in Oz and the forced subtitles in Papryus font when Na'avi is spoken is still burnt in to the video and there was no need for any forced subs.

GregiBoy, may I ask what format you used and you simply unchecked all your subtitles?

Yeah, I used MKV and yes, unchecked all...

I had a similar problem when the DVD was released and I rememberd it.

Okay I'm posting the internal log and hopefully that will show what I am doing wrong because I am still not getting forced sub titles. Thanks for looking at it and I appreciate whatever feedback you can give me.

It shows no forced subpicture in the disc. Please play it in PowerDVD,do not select any subpicture and check whether forced subpicture shows or not.

Hi - I've been working on this one too (AVATAR EXTENDED CUT - BOX SET - BLU RAY - UK RELEASE), for a number of months - I have not been able to find a solution to this problem. I have tried numerous connotations of 'Ticked' and 'Unticked' in the subtiles boxes and various profiles including MP4, AVI, MKV, M4V, VOB and none of them will render the 'Navi' translation subtitles directly to the video output.

I predict that the Navi translation is encoded into the second English subtitle stream from the list, as no subtitles appear (when the Navi speak) when the video is previewed using the DVD Player preview function with either the "Direct Render to Video" ticked or unticked. DVD Fab just does not pick them up! Must be different encoding (something to do with the 'Font Type' maybe? but I'm no expert!).

In reply to the post above - When the disk is played using 'Power DVD' the Navi translation is shown correctly.

Perhaps a member of the DVD Fab team can acknowlege the issue or if someone finds at least a temporary fix they could post the 'EXACT' settings here.

I did play this movie and there are forced sub pictures so since DVD fav isn't showing them then the issue would seem to be with the software.

I already have viewed this movie an number of times both on my computer and on my blu ray player so I know that there are forced sub titles. So if they are not showing up in the log then the issue is with the software.

I have ripped 4 versions of the AU disks of this title (Std & Extended Versions, BR & DVD) and I found that "FORCED" subtitles is a misnomer in this case.

The subtitles that occur in yellow, papyrus font when Na'avi is spoken is actually already burnt into the viideo image and thence will not show up as a subtitle track.

The use of font, colour, burn-in were apparently at the strong insistence of the Director, James Cameron.

The best place to check this is about is where Norm & Sigourney have their first discussion in Na'avi (about 10:00 on the std version). When I was testing I just did the first couple of chapters to test this.

OK - Thanks for that information..... I too have ripped various versions of the UK release on DVD, Blu-Ray, and Extended Blu-Ray. The results are as follows.

For the UK releases of the movie:-

DVD - The 'Navi' translation is rendered directly to the video without having to select any of the Subtitles streams. (Seems like it is 'Burnt' directly into the movie as you have stated in your post).

Blu-Ray - The 'Navi' translation is NOT rendered to the video neither when played or ripped using DVDFab. (No matter what is selected in any of the Subtitles streams, or when nothing is selected at all).

Blu-Ray (Extended Cut) - The 'Navi' translation is NOT rendered to the video neither when played or ripped using DVDFab. (No matter what is selected in any of the Subtitles streams, or when nothing is selected at all).

So if you are managing to get a postive result from ripping either of the Australian Blu-Ray versions, then it must have something to do with the Australian release of these Blu-Rays. The UK Blu-Ray versions do NOT have the 'Navi' translation 'Burnt' into the main video image, and DVDFab does not recognise the 'Navi' translation subtitles. (Remember they do display correctly when playing these Blu-Rays using Power DVD, or on a Standard Blu-Ray player)

Interesting to note that it is only on the Blu-Ray Extended Version that shows a 2nd English subtitle stream (Which outputs nothing different to the first in the list when ripped)

What I would be doing in this case then is ripping to the hard disk and then using Subtitle Edit (Freebie Download) to analyse how the authoring has been done.

I have had to do that on a couple of titles, the DaVinci code comes to mind.

I looked at that subtitle edit and it only works for DVD's, not Blu Ray so it won't help me.

The version that I currently use 3.2.8 rev 1220 allows "Import/OCR Blu-Ray sup file" option which I use.

If you can't read from the rip, use MKVCleaver to extract the sup file.

I finally got a chance to look after finding the right program and I can't find any .sup files in the copied version of avatar. I used the Blue-ray copy to make a copy of the disk on my hdd. Nor can I find any .sup files on the actual disk itself. So now I'm really confused. how is it I can see the subtitles when I watch the movie on both my blu-ray player and using Power DVD but I can't see them anywhere else?

after using Import with manual chosen encoding, I was able to find something but since I'm not a programer I have absolutely no clue what it means so I made a screen grab hoping someone could tell me.

You need to import/ocr the stream and then you can see what is going on.
