DVD Ripper Audio out of sync with video

I have 2 DVDs that I have ripped using both v8 and v9 in which I find that the video lags behind the audio.

The first of these the audio is consistent 0.5-1 sec ahead of the video. The other, though, starts pretty well in sync but by the end of the video (~85mins) it lags by about 15 secs.

Has anyone seen this sort of problem and found a solution?

    Chris.

You need to supply more iniformation. What are the titles of the discs? What version of DVDFab? Which conversion profile are you using? Please post the DVDFab internal log from the out of sync conversions and try these two things first: 1) disable all GPU acceleration in Settings->A/V Codec and 2) install the latest version of DVDFab, currently v9.0.2.0.

Thank you, Signals, for your response.

Yes, I was probably a bit terse with my problem description. So here goes:

I am using v9.0.1.6 (I have downloaded v9.0.2.0 but can't get it to install - the installer hangs).
The DVD is "The Sheepman" - a mastering of an old celluloid movie in the "Classic Western Collection" series. This DVD plays without problem with VLC Media Player, Windows Media Player, and via a standard Blu-ray player attached to my TV.
When it loads into DVDFab it has a very simple organization - just Title1, 01:25:44, 12 (chapters), EN PCM/2 (audio) and no Subpicture. I have used the default settings for a Samsung Galaxy SII 9100. This gives the following under the Advanced Settings button:
Video - mpeg4, Fast encoding (1-pass), 720x312, 29.97 (Same as source), Customized (video quality), 1347 kbps, 1056 MB (output size), 0.2 bits/pixel, No split.
      Audio - aac, 48000 Hz, Mono, 128 kbps, 100%
      3D - not available
Subtitle - Direct render to video.

You ask me to try this without GPU acceleration - under Advanced Settings I have no options to select under both video and audio codecs. Is there another Settings because it's not obvious to me?

Finally, where do I find the internal log so that I can forward it to you?

      Chris.

Thank you, Signals, for your response. I posted an initial response to you but I can't see it in the thread as yet, so hopefully it will appear anon. This is a further update.

I have now managed to install version 9.0.2.0 after a reboot. I have found the Settings > A/V Codec and ticked on "Disable all GPU codecs for decoding and encoding". The resulting MP4 file still has the audio running well behind the video - in fact, no real change.

I have, I hope, added the log file from this conversion. Just in case, though, here is its contents (internal.log) that relate to the v9.0.2.0 job:

          Audio Lag

If you play using iTunes, there is a problem in iTunes that causes the audio to gradually lag further and further behind the video. I have seen it on many videos and podcasts. If you use AppleTV it seems to go away. I think there are issues with the new iTunes.

Thanks for your suggestion, xavi1951. I haven't had any success in getting iTunes (latest version) to recognize MP4 files. All I get when I attempt to load one of these is a "1" appears alongside the Films tag in the Libraries section of the LH pane and no error/failure message. If I right-click this tag I get only the option to "Export", and that produces a Films.txt file by default. M4V files are OK, though.

            Chris.

              Signals,

Have you had a chance to analyze the log file output I sent 5 days ago? I'd love some suggestions to try if you could offer them.

              Chris.

You can try this older version of fab 8.0.8.5 and try again. This older version may not remove the copy protection if it doesn't just use it to convert after you use the latest version to remove the copy protection.

I've now downloaded, installed and used v8.0.8.5 to rip the problem DVD. I left the profile for MP4 at generic.mp4,.h264.aac but the resulting MP4 file still shows the video lagging ~15 sec after 1 hr 20 mins with this DVD.

I then went back to v9.0.2.2 and tried 8-10 different output devices, producing MP4, and WMV files. In each case the video lags by the same amount.

It would appear that this DVD is a type that DVDFab is unfamiliar with, despite the fact that it plays normally using 3 different PC - DVD/Blu-ray players with VLC and Windows Media Players, and on a DVD/Blu-ray player attached to a TV set.

Is it worthwhile progressing this further? And if so, how do we proceed?

                    Chris.

Send it in to support click on support on the black bar and then click contact fill out the form send in the logs and explain the problem also that you used the all softwear setting in fab and this still happens.Tell them where you brought the disks as sometimes they go out and buy them.Wait a few days for them to get back to you.

While this particular disk appears to be a problem for DVDFab, I have found a method to correct the out-of-sync audio. I report it here in the hopes that, should someone else find a similar problem disk, they might be able to correct it using this method.

                        Method:
                        1. Produce the ripped MP4 file as normal. (This DVD gives the audio ahead of the video by ~18 secs after 1hr 25min - the length of the video.)
                        2. Using AVS4U Audio Editor, import the audio track only from this MP4 file (File -> Import from Video).
                        3. Make any adjustments to the audio that you think necessary, e.g. amplify the volume.
                        4. What we need to do is to stretch the audio over a longer time. ASV4U AE has the nice facility, Effects -> Tempo Change. This allows you to alter the time period of the track without affecting its pitch. I found that when I set the ratio back to 99.69% I got almost perfect synchronization. Save the stretched track as an MP3 file.
                        5. Open ASV4U Video Editor and import into a new Project both the video MP4 file from step 1, and the stretched audio MP3 file from step 4.
                        6. Add the video file to the main time line. Click the audio button and set its amplification to the minim possible. This is to suppress the out-of-sync audio track.
                        7. Add the stretched audio file to the Audio Mix time line (5th from top) ensuring that it starts at time 00:00. Note: my v6.3 of AVS4U VE plays the audio out-of-sync with the video, but saves it in sync. Thus, you are not able to check within AVS4U VE whether your stretched audio file has the correct adjustment ratio until you save the file (next step). This seems to be a "feature" of VE!
                        8. Save the new video (click the Produce button) with your preferred settings. I chose File -> MP4 -> Video for Android tablets (H.264, 1280x720, 24fps).

The final MP4 file, when played with VLC or Windows Media Players (and MX Player on Android), has the audio in sync (when you have guessed the correct ratio to use in AVS4U AE).

Note: I have been using the latest versions of AVS4U AE (7.1.4.476), VE (6.3.1.231) and DVDFab (9.0.2.2).

Perhaps someone has a better method? If so, please share it with forum users.

                        Chris.

Did you rip the disk to the hard drive first then try to convert as 50 percent of audio lag problems happen at the layer break and if you do the conversion from the hard drive the layer break is not their. Also a new beta version 9.0.2.3 is out with a lot of fixes so give it a try.

                              Problem solved

I haven't been monitoring this thread since I found a solution to my problem.

The reason for this reply is to advise that the latest version of DVDFab, 9.1.0.6, rips this problem DVD (The Sheepman) with the audio in sync with the video. The (complicated) method I suggested can be scrapped, unless you have a problem DVD that this latest version doesn't address.

                              I hope this helps
                              Paul.
