Subtitles not working on some titles?

At the moment I'm using version 9.0.6.6 beta (but this problem has happened with previous versions as well) and I'm having a problem where some Blu-ray titles seem to have no working sub-titles despite English sub-titles being selected. But this problem is really the exception rather than the rule as 4 out of 5 ripps the sub-titles work fine.

I typically use ripp to Avi, codec h264 and Sub-title: Extract to idx/sub file which has always seemed to work well with my choice of video player Media Player Classic. For example both "A Bridge Too Far" and "Hereafter" seem to have this problem, in "A Bridge..." sub-title options are None, Display forced only, English, Spanish and English. I've tried ripping with the default English sub-titles and when that didn't work I re-ripped with both English sub-titles options selected. In media player classic I have Play / SubTitles / Enable and Default style checked and at the bottom of the subtitles menu I can see two options for both English subtitles but unlike most other movies when either one is selected I still get no sub-titles of any kind?

Has anyone seen a problem like this? Any idea's?

Agreed: forced subtitles not working in 9.0.6.7.

Particularly, A good Day to Die Hard.
The very start, where the guy is being visited in the prison.

On the DVD there are subtitles for their dialog.

In the M4V file I ripped (x 5) with various settings - nothing..
Using the Apple.TV3 profile.

There are two English subtitle tracks on A Good Day To Die Hard, the first one contains the full subtitles, second one contains the Russian to English only subtitles, but they are not marked as forced. So select the second English subtitle track, but don't select "forced only". IIRC you'll find the same thing on A Bridge too Far. I've got both the relevant subtitles saved as "srt" files, so if you still can't figure it out, PM me.

It works fine for me, when ripped as MKV with the SRT file embedded in the MKV file. I use Windows Media Center with the Sharky CODEC pack installed.

The Tourist - Another problem title

I tried ripping the movie "The Tourist" and according to the ripper it has three English audio tracks and I selected all of them to be included in the ripp. When I play the movie, subtitles are enabled and at the bottom of the play / subtitles menu I see English, English, English and I try selecting each one in turn and I get no subtitles no matter which is selected.

Again, this is the exception rather than the rule but for some reason with the Avi format and export subtitles to idx/sub file there seems to be this problem with a number of titles.

Does anyone have any other idea's?

DVD Ripper Subtitles not working on some titles?

I just tried The Tourist again with version 9.0.7.2 and with all three English subtitles tracks selected I still have the same results as previously that when playing the Avi file no matter which English subtitles track I try and select I just don't get any subtitles.

Of all the selectable titles that show in the ripper title 1 is the only one with a playtime of 1:43:28 and every other titles is 9 minutes or less so title 1 is the only one that represents the entire movie. And when I go to the BDMV\PLAYLIST folder and play 00001.mpls I have these choices in the subtitles menu in my player:

English [eng](pgs)

English [eng](pgs)

French [fra](pgs)

Spanish [spa](pgs)

French [fra](pgs)

English [eng](pgs)

Forced Subtitles (auto)(English)

No subtitles

In Media Player Classic the default subtitles appears to be "Forced Subtitles (auto)(English)" and when that's selected I do get subtitles as they should be when playing the movie. However in the ripper the line and checkbox for "Display only forced subtitles" is grayed out and not selectable.

I believe that this suggests that there's some kind of problem with the ripper and some blu-ray titles where there's no way to get subtitles working with the Avi format since Nik Simpson seems to suggest that at least with the title "A Bridge Too Far" that ripping to the Mkv format did not have this problem.

Can anyone comment on this?

And the same thing on Dances with Wolves and many others (but not all!). For AVIs you should select only a single sub stream and then select Direct Render to Video. The movies will then play with the forced subs, just as they did in a theater.

There's no problem with Ripper. The problem is with how these titles are authored.

Ok, I can buy that but if that's the case can't the Fab people include some code to detect this particular problem and allow forced subtitles to be selected? I mean after all When playing the actual playlist file / movie subtitles appear to work correctly.

To do that would be extremely difficult as there are so many permutations and combinations that the idiotic authoring studios can use as there is no real fixed standard.

What I do with "Problem Children" titles like these is a full disk rip to my HDD (which I always do anyway first) then inspect the rip with the free Subtitle Edit program.

With this, I can usually figure out what the idiots have done and work out what I have to do with Fab to achieve what I want.

I've been a little busy and this is this first chance I've gotten to look into the subtitle editor. I found subtitle edit 3.3.12 by nikse.dk, I downloaded it and I'm trying to use it but when I use File / open it lists a slew of possible file extensions so where in the on disk copy of the disc should I be looking and what file type should I be looking for?

Yeah, that's the one.

First of all browse the DVD structure in the VIDEO_TS directory on your HDD and identify the set of VOB's that make up the main title.

The title is usually multiple VOB's of ~1Gb each.

Then in Subtitle Edit, Import/OCR subtitle from VOB/Ifo opening the IFO file of the same set.

Thanks Greg, but generally I don't ripp regular dvd's and only use the ripper for blu-ray movies. I can't say if this problem is only with blu-ray or not but I'm browsing the blu-ray disc structure looking for the file I need to open. Would that be the playlist file for the title I want to edit or some other file? Then once I open the file in subtitle edit, is there any kind of online guide that outlines what I need to do or look at to fix it so that the ripper will be able to extract the subtitles?

One other question if you don't mind, in one of your previous posts you wrote this:

I don't mean to be dense but this is confusing me for the following reasons: Both MPC and VLC are able to play the source playlist file and display proper subtitles, I'm sure that if I tried the DVDFab media player that it too would have no problem displaying any of the subtitle tracks. If these media players have no problems locating and displaying subtitles for the source why is the ripper having such a hard time and is unable to extract working subtitles (even when all English subtitle tracks are selected) when the media players seem to be able to without any problems? I mean if I had problems displaying subtitles in MPC, VLC or DVDFab Media Player then it would completely make sense that the ripper would in turn have a problem with subtitles but that doesn't appear to be the case?

You're not dense at all, Norm.

Subtitles are a relatively new feature for DVDFab, particularly remuxing into the file. Clearly, the DVDFab development team still has some work to do, as we've seen multiple issues with some pretty standard media players.

Fengtao - Can you please get someone to review the forums for the various subtitle issues, get them prioritized and knock them out in some upcoming releases?
