    Resolution of DVD rips

Started ripping in all my DVDs, saving as mp4s, for use with plex and ability to put on ipad when traveling. In advanced setting, why is the default resolution NOT the highest resolution, is it trying to mimic the original resolution of the film? For Instance on the movie Doubt, the default resolution is 720x396 why NOT 856x472. Will changing it to the highest resolution have any negative effects? It's only a small bump in file size.

The resolution shown in Ripper is the cropped size of the decoded active video (no black bars). You can set it higher, but it will not look any better on playback since the player will upscale the video on-the-fly to fill the screen and the processing time and file size will be increased. Increasing the video bitrate will have a small but positive effect on the image.
