Coverter does not recognize muxed subtitles in MKV files

I have muxed subtitles into MKV files using MKVMerge. The files play fine with the subtitles in Windows Media Player.

So why can't DVDFab Video Converter recognize that there is an embedded subtitle in the file? The subtitle setting is grayed out.

By the way, this has nothing to do with my configuration. Everything is set to "software", etc. I went through the whole process with regard to another problem.

Can someone there test this with any MKV file after muxing a subtitle?
It seems to be the case regardless of the version. I last tried it with 8.0.7.0

I need to be able to do this to convert the MKV files to AVI with hard-coded subtitles.

I'm not the only one who needs to do this:

    Also I have another question.
It does let you specify an external file, but why does it have to be a .srt file? The rippers all know how to process .sub and .idx files. Why can't the converter?

    Thanks.
