I'm not sure that this is specifically a DVDFab problem but I'm looking for some advice on why this is happening: In the past six months I've had problems with two Blu-Ray discs in particular, the first is "The Incredibles" and the second is "Scent Of A Woman". I have three different Blu-Ray drives, two Pioneer BDR-208D's, BDR-207M and a third that just shows up as Pioneer BD-RW (no model number). In the case of "The Incredibles" I tried four different discs in all three drives and in each case there were read errors on each disc. In some cases it would be at the beginning while DVDFab was analyzing the disc, in other cases it would get past that and when the disc was copying I'd get a read error somewhere on the disc between 4% and 20% and after clicking "Ignore All" I tried to let it sit for five hours trying to get past the read error and it never would. The problem with "Scent of a Woman" is exactly the same, I tried two different discs in all three drives and again sometimes the read error is at the analyzing part otherwise it was either at 3% or 11%. Of course one of the first things I did was clean the discs but no matter what I still get these read errors. Does anyone have some insight into what the problem is? - Norm

Are you using the latest version of Fab version 9.0.9.5 if not please download it and try again.Read errors are caused by dirty or scratched disks most of the time so if their are deep scratches you won't be able to copy them even if they play well. Their was a problem with a few earlier versions of fab with reading some disks so it's always important to update to the latest version that corrected this problem.If you are using the latest program and still have a problem post your internal fab log files to the disks your having trouble with.

And if that fails, try those problem disks with PathPlayer turned off.

However when I go to Blu-Ray there are no PathPlayer options anywhere on the Blu-Ray config screens. Does disabling PathPlayer for DVD's also disable is for BluRay discs? Download VSO inspector from the internet a free program that will do a surface scan and tell you if its the disk it will report all reading errors and if it's a bad disk.Be careful you don't download other junk with it.I believe path player is for regular dvd's not blu rays.Path player should be on for regular dvd's unless theirs a problem with one then turn it off for the problem dvd only then turn it back on.

The file appears to be a self extracting Rar file and the self-unRar program appears questionable and I hesitate to use it, see the screen shot I attached. I'll try and find an updated firmware for my drives on Pioneers site and let you know how I make out. Hi Norm@HomeThat is strange that it is a rar file, I always get my firmware updates from that site and I trust them, I even tried to open the file and got the same picture as in your screen shot. :confused:I also use VSO Inspector for DVDs.The problem is that you have to remove the protection first before using it, or you will have all kinds of errors.What I do is play the movie in your soft player on your computer, while the movie itself is playing pause it, but do not exit out of the player.Now start VSO Inspector and run the scan to see if you have different results.CBR929

I am having the same problem with Bluray and 3D. Two of the three Star Wars - V & VII - had disk read errors and Avatar 3D same problem. Phantom and Star Wars VI copied fine.Seems strange that it would be a burner/reader problem when some work and others don't. I get the "read" error on both my reader and burner drives?

The M version simply means it will read and write to M discs. The layer written to is rather more like stone than aluminum foil and supposed to last 1000 years. I smoked for years and drank beer so I probably won't live to find out.

Thanks for clearing that up, When GlenS said that was an overseas model I was wondering how I managed to get one from Amazon here in the USA. I'm still trying to locate a firmware update for this drive. The Pioneer website lists a version 1.30 for these drives BDR-207UBK, BDR-207EBK and BDR-207DBK and I don't think any of these will work for the 207M model.

(The drive, also available outside the U.S.) as BDR-207M (generic model), BDR-207MBK, BDR-207JBK and BDR-207UBK, is the successor of the BDR-206M(BK), which we have already tested here at CDRInfo.com. Compared to the to BDR-206M, the new new drive offers faster burning and reading speeds with CD, DVD and BD and BDXL media.

Infomation from CDRinfo.com check it out other sights call it a overseas model
because it's brought their as BDR207M a Generic model of the US models with different model numbers.Amazon sells outside of the US also and may have brought this model to serve both markets with the same drive.

Fire off a email to Pioneer and ask if theirs newer firmware for your overseas Generic model.It's possible you may use the BDR-2207 firmware but I wouldn't do it unless Pioneer tells you it's ok.

BDR-207M - with XL and DVD-RAM (probably MIC) follow up for the 206M, so probably for all markets
BDR-207D(BK) or (SV) - no XL and no DVD-RAM capabilities, worldwide, BK == black bezel, SV == silver bezel, there is even a white/grey version (should be MIC drives)
BDR-207 - same as 207D but with DVD-RAM capabilities
BDR-2207 - RETAIL version with XL and DVD-RAM for the NA market (should be MIC drives)

I received today a fifth copy of "Scent Of A Woman" which I bought online, this disc copied perfectly and unlike the fourth disc I had a few days ago the copy not only plays perfectly but you can see here in the stream folder:

That the 00023.m2ts file is over 44GB in size while the same file on the fourth disc was only about 4.7GB. I still don't understand how it's possible to get four bad discs in a row where three of them had read errors and there was something wrong with the fourth where copy said successful but didn't get the entire contents of the disc, truth be told I probably spent enough money on gas and postage to buy three copies of this disc and that's a little frustrating.

I also ordered another copy online of "The Incredibles" since it's been a year since I went through four discs without being able to play or copy / ripp them but I haven't received it yet. When I get it I hope that I have some sucess with it and I'll post back with the outcome.

It's not unheard of that manufacturing defects in discs are run in batches Norm. This might occur if getting the disc in the same store where they receive them in consecutively manufactured batches.

And the number of titles that are produced with manufacturing defects is quite amazing. From last figures that I saw, it was running around the 20% mark. A friend of mine in the industry has had one batch with around an 80% return rate.

The mind boggles.

The impression that I get, it is cheaper for the studios to deal with replacements up to the 30% level instead of enforcing better QA.

Wow, I would have never have believed that any manufacturer could get away with selling something with that high a defect rate or that quality assurance is so nonexistent that is wasn't detected and corrected.

The defect I was speaking of will not prevent playing on a set top player with it's oversampling forgiveness, they just prevent backup of 1:1 data. Playing and backing up are apples and oranges, the fact it plays is meaningless when it comes to backing up.

I just got a new copy of The Incredibes and I'm happy to report that it copied and ripped without any problem. So I guess I can close this out, there must have just been a bad batch of Scent Of A Woman and Incredibles discs.

Can anybody explain why this is? I wasn't able to copy a heavily scratched DVD that played in my home player with just an occasional glitch.

Why is it that players can play through scratches most of the time but the copy process cannot? It's like it's too finicky and won't simply chill out and do the best it can. I don't need a bit-for-bit flawless copy, I just need to be able to watch the movie.

Transcoders like DVDFab are not as forgiving as a player. Just because a DVD will play doesn't mean it will copy, apples and oranges, two completely different processes.
