I am really frustrated. I keep trying to make a copy of a disc, but each time I get an error message that says, "Failed to Burn DVD. Do you want to burn again?" I have trashed 7 discs tonight and I give up. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Tad

No problem, I will provide any information that will help shed some light on what is going wrong. I have attached all of the log files to this post. Tad_R is a paid version of Fab or free? Log files show a Non-CSS version which I think may be one problem, try to download the newest beta version. Also the code you are getting is 122 HWS_FAILED_CALIBRATING 22 // Write failed at the beginning of the media (often a media that is poorly supported by the drive)

Frankly, I'm surprised you were able to rip a copy protected DVD at all, but it appears you were successful...had you been able to write it (the copy protection is causing all your write errors) it would have been un-watchable anyways... Un-install the Non-CSS version, and D/L the version from the link in this forum - "Latest Official Releases" - and please try one more time. Your media and drive both appear to be OK (there is better media, but when I used the Sony media, it caused no problems...). The new attempt should be more what you're looking for. DC :cool:

When my wife asked me to copy a disc, I installed the software on my new computer and put my registration key in and everything appeared okay. However, when I tried to copy the disc, it gave me the "non css version" error. I dug around and found the correct version and installed it on top of the old. I am going to completely uninstall and start over. Regarding the media, I thought that Sony would be the safest bet, so I bought a huge 100-pack of them. I saw someone else on the forum mentioned Verbatim. Is that a better, and better supported, media? Thanks again, Tad

Thanks again, Tad[/QUOTE] The best we can do on this question is offer our own personal experiences...I've had good luck with Sony discs - others have had bad experiences with them... Taiyo Yuden, by general consensus, offers the best -R SL disc, and verbatim the best +R DL disc... if you use any other brand than those, be guided by the results you get... (some results make take a few months to show up...) if your copies playback fine after 8-12 months, then you should be OK with that brand - the only problem with that is, is getting the same M.I.D. for the brand, when all you have to look at in the store is the package labeling, which doesn't list the M.I.D. DC :cool:

In addition to the excellent advice so far... Uninstall everything with respect to Fab. Use the uninstaller and then manually delete anything you find. In Windoz device manager > scroll down to VSO (at or near the bottom) > click on + to expand > Uninstall all instances of patin-couffin driver If you don't already have it, download and run CCleaner. Be certain to tick Old Prefetch Data under the Advanced heading. As DC suggested, Sony discs are good quality. However, they tend to be a bit finicky. By this, I mean they are less universally compatible than Verbs or Taiyo Yuden, but when they work, they work very well. I didn't have a chance to research your burner and firmware, but we can do that if it becomes necessary. I also believe you will be better off with Img as your default burn engine... but one step at a time. Good luck

Suggestion... Before removing or deleting the patin-couffin driver you should check to make sure you have no other program on your system that uses the patin-couffin driver because if you do those program will no longer work properly. Just my .02 cents :)

I disagree. There's no way to determine if the patin-couffin driver is part of the problem without deleting it. Regardless, the patin-couffin driver is reinstalled with the next install of Fab without harm to other VSO programs. You would have to opt out manually and not install VSO at all in order to prevent it from installing. BTW, Fab will still work without it as it now uses SPTI as its access driver. Okay, I have some wierd stuff to report. I followed the instructions and deleted the old version and went and searched out all files I could find that were associated with DVDFAB. Then, I ran CCleaner and rebooted and reinstalled. The only thing I didn't do was delete the patin-couffin driver because I couldn't find it. In Windows 7, it isn't in the device manager, or at least I didn't see it - and I ran many searches trying to find it with no luck. Anyway, guess what - It worked . . . or so I thought. I was able to finally get one of the discs to burn. It created a good working copy. So, I thought I would try again to test my luck and make sure that this wasn't just a fluke. I tried another disc in the same kid's series (to make the test as similar as possible) and it went back to giving me the "Failed to Burn DVD. Do you want to burn again?" message. Oddly, each time I tried to burn, it never did much after I entered the disc. The progress indicator stays at 0.00% or barely over that. When I did get it to work, it burned very quickly, although the finalizing seemed to take quite a while (made me very nervous). Anyway, I have attached the new logs. Please take a look and see if any news ideas pop up. This is very odd. Tad

opps... I have been using Memorex and having issues with reading/playing on my new dvd system (although burning was not a problem).. I just bought Verbatim -R blanks to try............ Thanks for your great advice You guys are great... :)

Before you sweat through a change of drive, I notice you're still using the Sony media...the Media ID isn't the same as what I used to get, and I suspect your drive (or stand-alone player... or both) doesn't like the media - try a change of media first, before you go for a new drive...

Try the smallest container you can find of Verbatim, SL, either +R or -R... if you get +R, please go back into Imgburn and make sure the Booktype is set to DVD-ROM, and try once more. (Just don't get Memorex...).

For what it's worth, from someone who has done a lot of back-ups, I wouldn't bother with the verification option... discs that verify clean can still pixelate, freeze, etc... the best verification method is your own two eyes...

Okay, I got some Verbatim SL DVD +Rs at Best Buy and tried again. I even took off the verification option. I also tried to copy one of my kids Veggie Tales, just to make sure it wasn't some issue with the other disc I was copying. Still no luck. I have attached logs and a picture of an I/O error I received from IMGBurn. As far as setting the booktype, I couldn't figure out what to do. IMGBurn seemed to recognize that I was using DVD +Rs, but when I went into the booktype setting screen, I didn't see an option to change to DVD-ROM without selecting a manufacturer. It wanted me to select by brand name of the drive, which I could not find (even after going into the device manager). Is it normal to not see a manufacturer name on a device?

I am ready to get a shovel and go bury this burner. Incidentally, I probably should have warned you all that I am the most unlucky person on the planet. If there is a high degree of statistical improbability that something negative will happen with something I purchase, then I will be in the affected group. You should have run for the hills when you saw me coming - LOL!

Anyway, if you guys are out of ideas, then I think I'm going back to Best Buy and buy a good quality drive. Any recommendations on brand and specs?

You read my mind at this point... have done a little research on your installed burner, and it seems to be fraught with problems...

LG, Sony are good DVD burners...but you'll need to decide whether you want to tackle BD as well as DVD before you make a purchase (I noticed from one of the logs you have a BD ROM on your system...)

Re setting Booktype...Imgburn > settings > Write > 4th checkable option - checked by default - just make sure it still is...

I was just looking over your thread and I have another idea if you're up for more.
I'm pretty sure it's down to a bad drive or corrupted registry files.
Let's have a look at your upper and lower filters.

Open Img > click on Tools > on the dropdown, click on Filter Driver Load Order...

Post what you see.

Microsoft recommends the following for troubleshooting.
You have to manually edit the registry which you may or may not be comfortable with...
Just scroll down for Vista:

Personally, I've always been a fan of this registry patch.

Just run it. No muss, no fuss.
It was created prior to public release of VIsta so download sites state it is for XP only.
However, I know users who have run this in Vista with good results.

Howdy CB, looks like it's an Hitachi, but like you before I looked around, I thought LG too.

My guess is that the gibberish is the result of an error rather than the cause, but who knows?
The extent of my "code" work was configuring HIMEM.SYS in windoz 3.1 so I could play the original Wing Commander game...:p

I am up for more if you think there is a reasonable possibility that the drive is good. However, most of you guys seem to think it's garbage (defective and bad quality to begin with), so I don't know. I have attached a screen shot of the Filter Driver Load Order.

I haven't made any of the adjustments you recommended yet as I wanted to see what you thought of the Filter info. Also, you mentioned Vista and I have Windows 7. Will these steps work with Windows 7?

Well, to be honest, I'm not a fan of your burner and I think it may have gone belly up, but hard to know for sure. Nothing personal here of course, but both DC and I found issues with this burner when we looked.

Still, I think you shoud get rid of both NTIDrvr and UBhelper as both can cause problems from what I could determine.
You can always reinstall them if they're essential for a program, but I've never heard of 'em.

Just did some digging of my own... not only is NTIDrvr a potential problem, but UBHelper is a piece of malware... OP would be well advised to run Malwarebytes on his system to get rid of that and anything else he has...

I have removed NTIDrvr and UBhelper from the registry and ran malwarebytes and copied the log above. I even followed some of the other Microsoft recommendations and no change. Even if I get a disc to burn completely, they won't play. We get weird error messages from the DVD player, like "disc is dirty," or "cannot load disc." Consider this my concession speech.

I am heading to Best Buy to get a new burner. Some of you guys said LG was good, and I know they carry them at Best Buy. Are there any specs I should look for, capacities, speed, etc?

Also, I just want you guys to know that I am extremely grateful for the time you put in to helping me. I have never seen such a dedicated group, and I am more grateful than you can imagine. In the end, you got to the root of the problem - you showed that my drive stinks! Thanks again.

Hey Tad,

You sure rolled up your sleeves on this one.
Time to toss in the towel on that Hitachi drive for sure.
I've never owned an LG burner, but LG is certainly a reputable manufacturer...a lot of folks own 'em and love 'em.

A word of advice...it's best to do a little research on a specific burner, make and model.
There are some really decent makes out there, like Sony-Optiarc, LiteOn, Samsung, Plextor, LG, etc.
But any make can and does have its problems with specific drives.

You must have a SATA II interface on your "late model" pc
If you post some specs or your model #, we can take a look.
Here are 3 very useful and free utilities:

Belarc Advisor
and
...which not only will give you system info, it will let you benchmark your system as well.

In any case, I picked up a couple of Sony-Optiarc 7240s drives last Fall...great all around burners and one of the best dual layer burners out there.
With modified firmware from Liggy and Dee, you can bitset +R and +R DL media and have RPC1 firmware (region free).

Newegg has them on sale for $25 sometimes, but right now they're still only $27.99 and $1.99 shipping...not a bad deal

Your motherboard has 6 internal SATA II connectors. You have plenty of SATA II connectors for more devices.
Purchase a burner with a SATA interface and you should be good to go.

Did you know you have SlySoft virtual clone drive installed?...it's a disc image emulator.
If you're not using this for a program, dump it.
