Just got the Gear VR headset. Movies on this thing are amazing.

Would love to see profiles for the Gear VR headset covering 2D and 3D rips and conversions.

best format for your gear VR

MKV H264 3D 1300x540 full SBS will give you amazing results. Developers should consider a GPU accelerated preset for H265 and H264 MKV. These settings will yield amazing output with any viewer and phone regardless of screen size. Works for cardboard, Gear VR, Homido, Freefly VR, Zeiss, etc. regardless of the smartphone being used.

Not to be contradictory but that will not work very well. In order to output the FSBS which will produce the best results for the VR Headset the screen size of the device is not very important. My recommendations were arrived at by large amounts of time researching the best format with much trial and error. The recommended setting will yield a full 120 degree fov on the FreeFly VR, 100 degrees on a Homido, 80 degrees on a cardboard, etc.

A dedicated hardware accelerated H265 and H264 MKV 3D is just what is needed, please consider developing as this would have great potential to boost your sales as this new media market develops.
