How to save movies in computer to copy for later

I am a newbie, totally just learning "How do you save your movies in computer and save ?" I remember when the movies would automatically save themselves in a file then you could delete them so it would not eat up your space in computer. I would watch my movies on the computer."Is that still possible?"
