Newbie Question - DVD to HD process question

I am pretty new to all this so apologies if this is in the wrong area of the forums.

I want to create a media library on my NAS to allow me to back up the100's of DVDs I have and stream to any TV in the house. After I found this software (which is great by the way - I'm still on the trial month but as long as I'm sure where I'm going with this will buy shortly) I copied a DVD directly to the NAS which took about 10 minutes but leaves the file structure with about 4 or 5 VOB files in the folder - when I play them through my media player they play as separate 25 minute films not one continuous one which is a pain. I've read that the technology in DVDFab is not quite there to create one VOB file yet but is there away around this issue?

next what I tried to do was pull the DVD folder file containing the VOB files from the hard drive on my PC into DVD Ripper and convert to MP4 - Which seems to work and plays fine as one file not several on the TV and compressed the file from @ 4gb down to 1gb - fine - the downside is this conversion process takes about 4 hours per DVD (the PC Processor is an older Intel one but its running at 3.4ghz so not sure if this is the issue or thats pretty standard?)

So after all the waffling two questions

1 Am I going about this process the most economical way or is there some way I can speed up the process.

2 If this is the answer do I need both modules of the software when it comes to buying or should I just go for DVD Rip directly form the DVD?

    Appreciate your thoughts on this.

    Steve

    Hi Steve and welcome,

How exactly did you copy the dvd?
Standard file structure includes: .VOB, .BUP and .IFO files.
You shouldn't be selecting individual files for playback, but rather the entire movie folder (comprised of VIDEO_TS Folder and AUDIO_TS Folder).

While DVD Copy will not create one .VOB file, DVDFab Ripper will.
Just select the VOB icon (VOB passthrough) and have at it.

(BTW, if the movie is already on my hdd, this process takes me roughly 1 minute).

This sounds way too long, given your cpu.
You are converting by the process we recommend; directly from the hdd files and not from the disc.
Not sure where your bottleneck is...we'll need some details here.
    Could you post your logs?
If this were a BD file, the lengthy conversion time would make better sense.

When I first started with my media player and conversions (about a year ago), I used one of GregiBoy's profiles and had great success with it.
Similar to your experience, it'll reduce a 4 G file to about 1 GB and honestly, I can't tell the difference on a 42" HDTV.

Give this profile a shot and see what your times are...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Hi Maineman - thank you very much for your respoinse- very helpful = I'm sure I'll get there eventually but its going to take a bit more trial and error on my part I think - anyway please see below I'd appreciate your thoughts once again to see where I'm going wrong

Just DVD Copy / Main movie only and set the target device as the Nas drive folder - to be honest most of the options are greyed out at this stage.

Yes thats part of the problem but even when I picked the main folder there was still a 10 second gap at the end of each vob file when the next one was opening - not a deal breaker just a bit annoying - even more so when the audio file picked up commentary which I didn't want (this was easily sorted though in the media player menu)

Haven't tried this but its next on my list tonight.

I think this is the way to go as the 2 TB NAS will soon get filled up if I do them all at 4.5g a time

Give this profile a shot and see what your times are...
Heres my next problem - tried to paste this in directly to DVD Fab but the profiles section just wouldn't let me do anything. After a bit of googling I found out that there was a standalone beta programme to download to help in this process - downloaded it but keep getting the message DVDFAB has encountered a problem and won't load so not sure where to go on this front now. Any help again gratefully received in the meantime I'm going to try DVD Ripping to 1 VOB file and see what happens.

Thanks for your help once again - best regds Steve

You can use MS notepad to copy, paste, and edit profiles; really any text editor should work.

Not sure exactly what you did, but you can't edit the profile by starting Fab > Profiles.
You'll have to navigate via Windows Explorer to the actual Program Files > DVDfab and so on to Profiles.

Re: the logs, just copy and paste relevant portions.

        The default location is:

        For Win7
        C:\Users\User Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log
        or for XP
        C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log

Thanks once again - log of the longest conversion (VOB to MP4) below (I believe).

Out of interest I tried Copy then DVD Rip to Vob and it seemed to work fine- about 10 minutes to do the copy and slightly less for the conversion. A minute would be better but I can live with that.

also put in the profile script suggested but when converting still can't see it amongst the other profiles but not too worried about this - will give it another go tommorrow.

          Thanks for the help again
