Other recording from directv

dont know if i can ask this here but I would like to record hd from my dvr (directv)
it has output as hdmi and svideo
i have used the svideo easy enough to a dvd recorder.
it lower the resolution.
what i would like to do is record the hd program i saved.

can i get a hdmi card for my computer and record it using that?

FYI: Making copies of movies that you own would be considered fair use by most people in the USA. Making permanent copies of cable/satellite content would likely be a copyright violation and your HDMI output may be securely encrypted for that reason (e.g. it only works with a TV that can decrypt it).
