    Blank Media Writable media size

Please forgive my ignorance, but, I noticed in the common settings that the default size for dvd5 disks is 4.3 gb (and I know I can customize it to anything else within the allowable range), yet all the blank dvd's I've seen are rated for 4.7 gb. Why is that? Is it like a formatted hard drive that takes up space for the formatting and the real usable space on a 4.7gb dvd is really only 4.3gb?

4.7 GB is misleading as this is the manufacturers' advertised size and is measured in decimal.
    Your pc uses binary.
The real size is ~ 4.37 GB...nice huh?

Assuming good quality blank media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim (with the AZO Dye logo on the wrapper),
a safe, max write size is 4472 MB

Regnad - thanks for the reply - I wasn't even considering that 1k is 1024 bytes and not 1000. That explains a lot - thanks again - appreciate it.
