Audio Problems

I am new to this.
I am trying to back up my DVD's.
I was told by a friend to use DVDFab and to convert the DVD's to AVI files.
In converting the DVD's i am getting quiet audio and loud music. Normally the music is in the background so you can hear the audio. It seams to be reversed.
How do i fix this.
Am i even going about this the right way?
Any suggestions would be helpful.

What excatly are you doing?
Backing up dvds to what? Hard drive? Blank dvd? Mobil something?
Without information it is a guessing game.
