New to ripping and encoding and need some help

I have a substantial collection of Blu-Ray discs (over 600) and other media items that I am no longer going to insure and I need to find some way of backing these up. I have purchased two 3TB external hard drives for my PC and for my new 1080p Dell XPS laptop, for archival purposes and I need to find some way of ripping these Blu-Rays and DVDs to a playable format on a Windows 7 PC and a Windows Phone 7 smartphone, as well as being able to leave them in a "raw" kind of form, so that should something happen, I have a pristine backup.

I asked some people in our IT dept. for some advice and one gentleman pointed me to the DVDfab software and to a piece of software called Handbrake. My problem is that I have never ripped anything more than a music CD, to put onto my iPod. That probably is shocking in this day and age, but I have never had a desire, or a reason, until now, to want to watch movies on my computer and I have always had my stuff insured, in case of fire or water damage.

So, does anyone here have a guide for how to do what I need, with the DVDfab software and the Handbrake program? Do I need something else? I'm fine with buying any software necessary, though I was told DVDfab and Handbrake were free. I'm good with a computer but have very little knowledge when it comes to encoding and ripping of media.

Thanks and if someone can really help me out, I might even throw a few bucks your way through Paypal. I have my work cut out for me and would like to start on this asap.

Maybe the lack of response is due to your arrogance of offering to "throw a few bucks" to people that have volunteered their time to help others.

Maybe it is because there are many guides on the forum and all it takes is effort on your part to read them.

And no DVDfab is not free but a few minutes research would have told you there is a free 30 day full function trial of the software.

        Can you explain "raw"?

Did you want a copy of the disk, as is, copied to the hard drive, or some kind of compression applied to make the hard drive file or files smaller?

Thanks for the reply. Really Marty, what I want is something that retains as much quality (picture and audio) as possible, should the original ever be damaged in any way. If it can be made smaller, that's fine though.

You need to read up on this and learn the program, but essentially you need to copy the Blu-ray disk to your computer as an ISO file, either the entire disk or the main movie only, which would make the file smaller.

There are players for the PC which will play ISO files; also media players such as the WD TV Live will play ISO’s.

This is also an easy format to burn back to disk if needed.

And from that .ISO file, am I then able to encode the movie into something playable on my Win 7 PC?

                  Thanks.

I checked through the "guides" link that the moderator posted and don't seem to see anything that shows my how to take a Blu-Ray and actually get it onto the computer though. Is there some sort of broken down, step by step kind of guide that shows me what settings to use, in the DVDFab software, etc?

Ok after my first effort, ripping a Blu-Ray using the "Blu-Ray Ripper to PS3" instructions, the quality was fine but the audio was a good ten seconds out of sync. I played it using a few different types of playback software and it was the same on all. Any ideas?

Sorry to ask another question, but when it does the Rip to PS3, does it store the "ripped" disc somewhere on the computer? Just wondering because it's roughly a 20GB movie and if it does do this, I need to know where it puts it so that I can move it to my external HDD's.

                            Thank you.

                              Hi jblank
Please do not convert from your optical drive.
First save it to your HDD as BD50 "Movie Only" without compression using BD Copy.
Then open the hard drive folder and use the folder on your HDD to convert your movie.
Doing it this way saves wear and tear on your optical drive and is also faster.
Also Open Fab click the Click the Green at top right corner of the DVDFab screen, and open Common Settings > General >A/V Codec, put a check in Disable all GPU codes and make sure they are set to Software, restart Fab and try again.
For your last question, No Fab will not store the file on your HDD doing it the way you are doing it but, the way I suggested will store it on your HDD and the default location is in your documents folder under DVD Fab or your can make a new folder to store it in or on your external drive.
                              Hope this helps
