GregiBoy, Tell me how to do this again please:
"I am trying to wean Unc away from ISO/Folder copies and get him to produce MKV/AVI fikes so have taken a slightly different approach."
I am already putting alot on my 3tb wd external drive. Best buy has it on sale this week for $ 139 plus free shipping. Think I'll pick up another! Maineman, going to try that clone to external hdd and see if it works. I already know that doing a "Full Movie" to hdd to disc only makes a 2d back up.

Again Unc, I will say "Read my Best Practice Thread & start with DVD's".

You will need to use the "Ripper" functions of Fab or find other FREE software that will do the job from the Folders/ISO's that you have created.

Gregiboy, I have read it and reread it.(I read it before I posted just now.)
I do not see where it tells me how to change file encodes from Iso to mkv or anything else. I must be blind or just missing it all together. Sorry. I can't seem to grasp how to change both from a disc backup or a current file. Is there a picture tutorial anywhere. A picture paints a thousand words! ***ok just watched Dvdfabs convert blu ray to mkv*** Exactly what will it accomplish? Will I still get the DTSMa? and picture quality? How much hdd space does it save? It was a lot more complicated than Blu Ray Copy! Especially for a dope like me!

To give you an example using a DVD:-

          Main Movie usually 4-6Gb
AVI/MKV file with 5.1 sound, close a dammit to DVD quality ~1.2 Gb

So you are looking at about a quarter of the space.

BR, I will use an example that I have handy... Hunt For Red October

          Main Movie = 23.4Gb
          MKV = 8Gb

That is quite a space saver I agree. But do you still get the Hd audio tracks such as DTSMA or DolbyTruehd?

Yep. Depends how you do it and what track(s) you select.

To be quite honest though, if you are like maineman and I and spent a mispent youth listening to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, etc, I would bet you my bottom dollar that you couldnt pick the difference between DolbyTrueHD and normal 5.1.

GregiBoy, I'm going to check the blu ray ripper and maybe try converting my discs to MKV? If I can save that much space and still get a great picture with the hd audio then it would be well worth it for me. You know once I get rolling on this I'll have tons of questions....Be forewarned!

Did my first Blu Ray Ripper to MKV everything seemed to work great. Have to transfer to external hdd and see how it looks and sounds on the Aios. Is the Dvdfab logo watermark on the movie because i haven't yet purchased the ripper? I purchased blu ray copy months ago and never got the watermark?

                    Congrats!

Yeah, I think so, never came across this specific question before.
The questions were always in relation to un-decrypted files.

Do you mind posting your mkv settings?
                    Thanks

                        Variety of ways I guess...

Did you just use the default settings in Fab?
If yes, no reason to post.

You could post a screenshot. Open Fab and just click on the edit tab for the mkv profile you're using.

You could open the profiles in Fab, for eg.,
                        (c: > ProgramFiles (x86) > DVDFab 8 Qt > profiles3)
and c&p the appropriate profile and post it here.

No big deal, I'm just curious.
Like I said if you're using default settings,

Yes I just used the default settings and picked what I think has the hd audio and MKV.H264.Audiocopy profile. But there is the watermark through out the back up?

Yeah, apparently when using the trial phase of BD Ripper this watermark is imbedded...even though the file has already been decrypted.
                            I'm just guessing here.

Just tested it on the Aios. It looked and played fine. The hd audio was present too. Very Impressive. I backed up Transformers 3 starting at 40gb and Ripper lowered to 10gb mkv. Very impressive. I will be purchasing ripper as long as the watermark doesn't exist.
