DVD Copy only costs $10 more than DVD Passkey. But I cannot tell if DVD Copy has all the features of DVD Passkey for reading all possible foreign DVDs. I want to be sure not to use up my laptop's dvd player's region code changes. Aside from US dvds, I'll mainly be playing R2, DVD9, PAL dvds.

You'll probably want DVD Copy, Passkey is a driver decrypter that allows you to use other programs like Nero Recode to make backups. It will rip a full copy to the HDD but doesn't compress or customize in any way.How to post the internal log

BTW your computer should play any region coded DVD. Region coding is mostly for set top players. How to post the internal log

Thanks, 90312. My question was sort of the opposite. I know there are good features in DVD Copy that aren't in Passkey. I want to know if the reverse is true.
As for regions, I think many computer DVDs are region limited to 4 changes. After that, they lock on the last regions, just like separate DVD players. Mine, for example, reports:
Drive region: 1
User changes left: 4
Vendor resets left: 4

Unless your computer is an Apple you should have no problem with region codes. I don't really understand your question? Passkey will sit quietly on your task bar and make any DVD appear to be unprotected and other than ripping to the HDD uncompressed that's about it. It will make them appear region free if that is what your asking. How to post the internal log

The point of this is if I buy DVD Copy, do I also need to buy Passkey to make my foreign DVDs all appear region free.Last edited by RogerRegion2; 12-09-2011, 09:16 PM.

Hi RogerRegion2
Like my friend said, Passkey will defeat the copy protection from your DVD so that you can make a region free backup.
You will need other third party tools to compress and burn to disc using Passkey.
DVD Copy will also remove the protection but, it will allow you to compress and burn to disc, your back up copy will be region free also.
You will not need Passkey if you have DVD Copy.
Hope this helped

If you wish the DVD's to appear region-free and actually play the originals from the optical drive, you will need passkey.
If tou want to copy them first and use the copy, use DVD Copy. DVD Copy does not have the on-the-fly decryption capabilities of passkey."Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin 1706-1790

Also depending on the drive manufacturer you be able to find region free firmware. If it is a Matshita don't waste your time. How to post the internal log
