CPU/GPU A/V Codec & Enable Lightning-Recoding

I have done searches in the forum, but have not, so far, found answer to two questions that I have. First, what is the difference between disabling and not disabling the A/V codecs? Second, what does Enable Lightning-Recoding doing and what does disabling it do and what does not disabling it do?

I am relatively new to DVDFAB and I right now I am trying to understand the A/V codec options and what effect they have. I am not even sure which prefix I should put this under.

If you are re-encoding the material, eg BD50->BD25 or BD->MKV, they can improve your speed of processing by offloading the job to your high end video card or software.

Be warned though, sometimes this causes problems if using crappy drivers, etc and be prepared to go back and switch them all off.

I personally will NEVER use it!!! Seen too many problems.

Not to dodge your questions, but the answers will depend...to a large extent on the user's hardware, etc., and task(s) at hand.

Lightning Recoding is a technology used to accelerate h.264 decoding/encoding, generally when GPU acceleration is not an option.
While it is beneficial to some, it is problematic for many.

If you post your rig's specs (basic), we can offer some practical advice.

System Hardware Description

Hi!

Thanks for the reply. My system is:

Win 7 64bit
Intel 2dual core E6700 2.67hz
8 Gb memory
Radeon HD 5570 1gb video card

Also, I have three 3D videos. I have been able to backup Dispicable Me and Green Lantern with the default settings in DVDFAB. I also have Pirates of the Caribean: On Stranger Tides, which I was able to backup to full size ISO. However, when I compress it to fit the 25 gb format, the colors go weird on me (it looks as if it is solarized) and the final compressed size is too large for a 25 gig blu ray disc whether or not I disable HD audio.

I did succeeed in getting a compressed copy, which fit on a disc, by disabling the GPU codecs check box, but I left the Lighting-Recoding enabled. However, this puzzled me as I was able to backup the first two movies with the GPU codecs enabled. So, I thought I better find out what these settings do and don't do as my behavior was trial-and-error (random) until something worked.

I am considering buying a new video card, but I don't know if I need to or which ones are best for this sort of thing.

System Hardware - Further Info

I should probably add that I am using DVDFAB 8.1.3.8 and I have a license for everything. I have been using the Blu-ray Copy.

The A/V Codel readout is:

Graphics Chipset :
ATI Radeon HD 5570

Supported Video Codecs :
DXVA_MODE_H264
DXVA_MODE_VC1

CoreAVC : cannot be detected

ATI Graphics boards seem to be a worry from time to time.

As I said, I will not use this feature nor buy a high end board to do it as you are at the mercy of the board manufacturers to ensure that their driver operates correctly but would rather invest in fast CPU, memory & disks.

CoreAVC has to be purchased. Again, I don't like it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will rely on the software codecs as you suggest and hold off on a new video board. I do not want to spend money that I do not have to.

Recommend that you disable Lightning-Recoding as well.
I'm curious as to whether or not it is related to your issue with Stranger Tides.

Frankly, I believe Lightning-Recoding causes more trouble than it's worth.

regnad kcin, I cannot agree more. I am new to the forum, but have had DVDFab for about 1 1/2 years. I have a large collection of BR movies and DVDFab has been great for backing them up. Overall that is.

I just recently have had problems with slight pausing, or stuttering, in the video as each new update came out. Only in the 'Main Movie' copy. Every time. When I make a 'Full' copy. No problem. Perfect every time. I wrote tech and they told me to uncheck the GPU. Same same results. They then told me to uncheck the Lightning encode. That worked.

To make a long story short I have tried 8.0.7.3, 8.0.8.5 and 8.0.9.2 and I can keep the GPU and Lightning encoding checked and get good copies. Every update since that time has been a shoot and miss at best. Since 8.1.3.2 the process got faster, it screams, but every main movie copy is terrible.

Did I mention audio sync problems too! Anyway, I am now running the latest and greatest 8.1.3.8 with the Lightning and GPU both unchecked, and while slower, I get a good copy 99 percent of the time.

If all the planets are lined up perfectly (CPU, Video Card, Drivers etc) enabling the Lightning Encode is the real deal, but if you have an everyday system like mine with a crummy video card etc then keep em' unchecked....

I could not agree more.

I regard all hardware & software speed-ups as "Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" and a marketing ploy, especially by video card manufacturers.
