Audio fails to play in generic media players

Would it have to do with the settings I am using? I have not modified the default audio DVD ripper settings however when the video is completed, audio only plays in VLC. Also, videos that I have converted in DVDFab no longer play audio in the generic media media players.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like the "generic media players" are experiencing an unsupported codec issue.
VLC will play virtually anything and does not rely on external codecs (an exception is BD .ISO).

What format did you convert to with DVD Ripper and what exactly are you referring to with "generic media players"?

My $89 AIOS will play anything.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

My apologies, I should have been more clear. I converted them to Mp4 format in order to add to iTunes and update the "Artwork" and iTunes/WMP do not play the sound on these movies, both the ones that were ripped and those that were converted.

Hope this clears up any earlier confusion.

      Thanks!

There are some old AVI's that it wont play. The very first video clip I tried to play failed on my AIOS but worked fine in M$ Media Player and Nero's Kwik. I downloaded 4 or more diagnostic programs before I found one that recognized the video codec used. GSpot and AVIcodec showed no video information. Mediainfo showed the codec as "RGB". I recorded the video in Win 3.1 using an early ATI TV Wonder and it's ATI's codec.

I am very pleased with my AIOS although it does not properly show Blu-Ray menus and I occasionally get the directors version and cant change to the theatrical.

I guess it's my turn to apologize for any confusion.

I'm out of state for at least another week so I can't tinker with any files/formats.

With respect to WMP, I'd say it's definitely an unsupported codec, but should be easy to remedy.
            iTunes may not support it...period.

...Or you could use VLC if this is an acceptable alternative and you should have smooth sailing.

No doubt I will run across something that the AIOS will stumble on...I just haven't as yet.
I'll do some digging when I get home.
Are the .avi files themselves old? the content....both?

Yep, I also like the AIOS, but like any of 'em, it ain't perfect.
We're you one of the lucky ones to receive the newer remote?
(Apparently, much of newegg's stock consists of the older, crappy remotes)

I think I paid $94 for it at NewEgg and it came with the remote shown on the right. I added a combo keyboard/trackball to assist the remote. It works really nice, but I noticed the following problem that I will probably post about over at pivosforums.

Problem so far: When plugging my USB 2.0 Samsung portable BluRay player, the SE-506AB, movies stutter with a BluRay disk. The disk is recognized as "Data CD" (whatever that is) and AIOS cannot display the menu that allows selection of threatical or narrative. However, it works just fine on DVD's. If I put in a DVD, it shows up as "DVD" and there is no stuttering and the menues for various episodes on the disk show up just fine. For comparison, I connected the same SE-506AB to an Asus netbook, 1015N, and DVDFab's media player was able to play the same bluray without any stuttering and with the proper menu. FWIW, my netbook had PowerDVD 9 and it refused to play the same bluray telling me my video chip was inadaquate.

That video clip which would not play on my AIOS was captured using an old ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder (1998?) and is a 335MB file. Nero Recode easily compressed it to only 4mb and changed the format to vidx at the same time. If you want to mess with it I PM'd its location to you.

I am curious what is in the AIOS and may open it up to see what all is there and what the CPU is.

@maineman - It occurs even on the files which I have just ripped from DVDs (Some are just out on DVD) I will try other formats to see if it is just mp4 that is failing...

Yep, definitely try a different format.
This could be something as simple as changing the file extension, but I doubt that's it.

I'd still recommend trying these mp4 files with VLC .
It's free and like I said, does not rely on external codecs and will play virtually anything.

You should be able to use VLC for the codec info.
                  I think it's "media information" > "codec"
                  or something similar.
Sorry, I won't be near a pc for a couple more days (using an iPad 3 right now)

Is VLC an option for you?

WMP should work ok as long as you have the appropriate codec.

Hopefully, someone who knows more than I do about this stuff...that should be really easy......will jump in and help.

Yes, VLC works perfectly. I was just curious in case I end up wanting to watch these movies on my apple tv or iPad..

                    Thanks for the help!

                      Awesome and you're very welcome.
Good to know your files play back ok and Fab is doing its job.

I just finished watching Act of Valor on my iPad 3...looked awesome.
(I'm in a hotel right now and flying home at 6AM tomorrow...sigh)

I use iPad profiles for both DVD and BD and they consistently yield great results.
I also use to do some iPod conversions for vacations...just used a patch cord and plugged the iPod into to tv or player.
                      No problems, looked ok considering.

I'd experiment a bit with iPad profiles. Just convert a chapter or two at a time and see how the files play back.

With the appropriate profile, iTunes should have no problems.

If you need help re: specific settings, I'll be home tomorrow
