I did not notice any copy protection on "The Dictator" & "The Hunger Games" DVD (i.e. rip with no problems using the older rippers e.g. DVD Decrypter) on a PC using a DVD ROM drive recovered from a scrapped DVD player manufactured within 18 months of DVDs being released. There was a rental copy of "Safe" about which also ripped without error (deleted directly after test).
I did not believe what I was finding so a colleague fitted a drive from a stand alone player of the same vintage that was retired after a hard life. It had no major problems with "The Dictator" i.e. 4 hardware re-trys over the entire disk.
I don’t know if this is old news or significant in understanding the new protections being developed.
