    Can't burn dual layer anymore

I was trying to backup a non protected DVD to DVD-RW DL and during burning it stopped with the message "burn failure". My LG drive does burn regular DVD-R;s ok with other software so I was wondering what I can do to diagnose this problem. I did not save an error log. How do you save one anyway?

@Mods, Post should be moved to Chat as it is NOT a DVD to DVD issue.

You said "ok with other software" ? ? ?

Johnny 5 needs more input (need more details/info) !!

Ok finally found the burn log:

      I have the lastest version.

My burner seems to work ok with single layer as I just tried it with Nero.

I don't dare waste another trial on a DL+R now. I managed to complete ok with a Verbatim (but it won't play). With the Fuji I get the burn error. The Fuji was the only brand I had before and it worked every time with the older versions.

RITEK-D01-01 blank media is junk and you should not even use it for DL back ups but MKM-003-00 is excellent blank media to be using which would be why it worked for you but was burned to fast which is why it not play. Do have a problem with the burn speeds that are selected as they are set to max speed and that is not good as the Ritek are 4x so you should burn those at like 2x. The verbatim are burned at 8x and should not be burned any faster than 4x or 6x speed for them. So it sounds like you should use ImgBurn for the burn engine instead of the VSO burn engine. Here is link for ImgBurn and how to use it with DVDFab below

Watch the youtube video as it will help with setting it all up

          Thank you for your advice!

Yes, 18 months ago, I bought a stack of Fuji DVD+DL's which were maxed at 2.4x. DVDFAB did burn these ok before which is why I am mystified as to why they failed now.

I did try one Verbatim DL and I forgot to set the write speed so it burned at 8x as this was a relatively new DVD.

I will read about imgburn and use it if it will prevent me from producing coasters.

can not guarantee it will prevent you from getting coasters but it is a start and you can control the burn speed for each blank DVD you use whether it good media or junk media. I personally only use Verbatim DL made in Singapore and burn them at 6x speed. I have used junk but have got so many coasters from them that I just use Verbatim from now on as I never get coasters with them unless the burn speed is too fast or I was doing other stuff while burning

May I suggest using Verbatim DVD+R D/L's 2.4x. (Get the ones made in singapore). I have yet to burn a coaster with these. At 2.4x Well using Imgbrn at 2.0x. I get very smooth copies.

I find I get excellent burns at 4x and 6x speed same for the 8x verbatim DL

Yes do yourself a favor and drop Nero, it is BLOATWARE. Only use ImgBurn, best burning engine on the planet and not a resource hog like Nero.

                    My 2 cents ...

PS: Don't forget to donate to the author (LightningUK) of ImgBurn as it is "donationware".

Oh my now I have to read and figure out how to use Imgburn. I installed it and found that I already had it when I was using DVDFlick and to produce ISO images and Nero to burn them.

I guess when I installed I updated the old version.

I am really concerned that my unprotected DVD's and stuff like big .avi files may not burn on Dual Layered disks.

Do I copy using IMGburn first now? Does this ensure that my copy is exactly like the source (if the source was unprotected)?

Sorry for teh simple questions as I am processing slowly and don't know much about these things. Life was so easy when I used DVDFAB to copy and burn 4.3 GB DVDs!

I figure the problem was the media as it was Ritek and the speed. I did set the speed to slowest and the Ritek still failed.

What exactly does the error logs tell you other than it failed to write at 50%? Why was I writing at 4x or a 2.4x rated dvd? (I think that's what the log says).
