"writing failed" happens halfway thru burning

    Hi everyone,
I am sorry if I am posting in wrong spot, I did have a look around but couldn't find anything to answer this.

I am very new to burning and am using DVD Fab platinum.
when I put this disc in, select the higher quality DVD 9 and it copies it, everything seems ok, then it asks for the blank to write so I have been using dual layer discs as I thought that was the right ones to use as the size is bigger. It starts writing them get halfway and stops saying it cannot write.
So I end up with half a movie on my disc.

if I do it in DVD 5 to a sinlge layer it works fine but the quality isn't great.

Can some one pls tell me in simple terms what I ma doing wrong and help me fix it pls as I am wasting heaps of discs

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Sim and welcome.
This could well be a blank media problem.
If you could post a burn log, it'll be a big help and save on guesswork.

    The default location is:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log

Alternatively, the problem may lie with VSO, Fab's default burn engine.
Suggest that you change to Img.
Here's a thread that will provide you with a download link and an excellent video tutorial on how to set it up with Fab.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I would get some verbatim Double layer DVDs made in singapore and then give it a try again as those ritek ones you have are junk media and is probably causing you this problem.

Hi Sim, both mods have given you great advise, using image burn, and also verbatim disc's, another thing you should always do also is whatever the disc speed is always burn at half the rated speed EGA. (4x)burn at (2x),(8x)burn at(4x),(16x)burn at (8x),hope this helps.

            Hi again Sim,

First off, you're using an ancient version of Fab....Fab 4.0.6.2 to be exact.
While this may work for quite a few flicks, its decrypting capability is hopelessly outdated.
            Please update to Fab 6.
You'll find the download links in sticky threads at the top of the forum page.

You will also need to retrieve an updated Fab 6 regkey which won't cost you a penny...
in order to run Fab 6
Simply enter your email that was used for the original purchase and request a DVDFab 6.x (all in one e-mail) regkey right here:

It looks like you have 2 burn logs, neither of which according to the log, would require DL media.

            12/01/2010 3:23:29 PM info Scanned files #9, folder #2 - total size 4432369664 b. (4.13 Gb.)

            12/01/2010 3:23:32 PM info Media ID: PHILIPS-041-00
            12/01/2010 3:23:32 PM info Media type: DVD+RW

Here, I'm not sure why this dvd is poor quality unless the RW disc is dying.
Please try this burn again , but use a decent quality SL blank and please try a +R or -R, not an RW.
Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden are recommended.
(Verbatim would be the easiest to purchase....TY would be available only online).
You can see the file size here is only 4.13 GB....well beneath the max file size for SL media.

            12/01/2010 3:52:11 PM info Scanned files #9, folder #2 - total size 4432369664 b. (4.13 Gb.)
12/01/2010 3:52:11 PM info Inserted media type : DL DVD+R

Here again, the file size is only 4.13 GB. You don't want to use DL media.
However, it should work except for the following:
            1. As described by AGJ,
RITEK-S04-42 (your DL media is crap)...no offense and nothing personal here.
We have all been guilty of using crap so you have lots of company...
            2. Your burner isn't handling this media and I'm guessing it's the firmware.
Verbatim +R DL is the only recommended DL media for video archiving.
You might still get these Riteks to work however...afterall you already have 'em and we might as well try.

Definitely switch to Img as I suggested in my first post to you (post #2).
This may solve most of your problems.
It's free and the video tutorial is straightforward.
If you have a problem, just holler, someone is almost always around.

Lastly, and I'm not anxious to have you do this, your firmware is old (I think...I couldn't find it) and
it probably makes sense to flash it with updated firmware.
Did this burner come in a dell pc?
and you probably purchased this in OZ?

I'm pretty sure your Philips burner is a rebadged Benq 1650 which would be awesome.
            More on that later.

            Sorry if this seems overwhelming..
A step at a time and you'll be fine.
Hopefully, this won't take too many steps...

Hi CBR929 and thanks for the help.
I'm not sure this firmware will work/benefit Sim.
I'm pretty sure she has a dell and this burner has dell firmware.
The Philips firmware is probably as old anyway.

I think if she has to update, she would be best to crossflash to Benq, but hate to recommend flashing firmware to someone that's never done it and it may not be necessary.

Hi Maineman, I'm curious but how do you know this a dell, looking at her log I did not see that? Anyway nice chatting with you Maineman. If it is a dell this is the dell driver http://support.us.dell.com/support/d...&fileid=192787

Hi CB and good talking with you too..
                    Honestly, I don't know....I'm just guessing.
I'm stuck at work and will be here late this eve so I'll try to look some more, but I'm pretty limited.

As it turns out, her firmware, 2D06 is official Philips firmware.
I thought I read about a user with this fw in a dell, but I couldn't swear to it.

We need to get confirmation from the OP about exactly what hardware she's got and if this burner is oem or what.
I think this is probably an Aussie pc too

                    Hope this makes sense.

Hi Maineman, AGJ and CBR929, wow you guys are awesome! Overwhelming ....but awesome

Firstly yep its a Dell (not wasting money on that crap ever again) and ordered online from Dell Aus so can only assume its aussie??

Note taken on the media type, will invest in some decent ones, wasnt sure there was such a difference. that'll teahc me for being tight

I know that this movie was small enough to use SL and only reason I used DL was that the one I have is printable and wanted to make a label. All the others I have tried are over 8gb when they copy the disc but it still happens.

Ok on the flashing firmware thing.....now you're freaking me out! thats another language to me

So I guess my next step is to try the IMG thing that Maineman suggested, Lets see how I go....

                      thanks heaps guys

Hi Sim....still stuck at work here and took a quick peek.
Yes, definitely try Img for starters and pick up some decent media.
You should be able to find some Verbatim at one of your local brick & mortar stores

Flashing firmware, while pretty simple these days, is not without potential problems. A bad or misflash could make your burner a very expensive doorstop.

Hi Sim, just taking a look to see how you made out. You haven't posted back, so no news must be good news. Just pick up some good disc's set up image burn, and burn a half the speed of your disc and we will throw that FIRMWARE update in the garbage for now. Happy Burning
