Best format to copy DVD to a portable harddrive

Very new at this, what format is the best for easy playback onto a portable hard drive, ISO, Mp4 etc. Need to send harddrive to my son and will be playing on laptop PC

Assuming this is a hard drive with a USB connection. The format all depends on what video player/codec he has on his laptop. Is the laptop running Windows or MAC? Not familiar with MAC OS, but Windows 10 natively supports mounting an ISO image as a virtual drive. What is the format of the files(s) in the ISO? Standard DVD structure? Something else? ISO is not a format itself, but just an image file that contains one or more files. ISO is usually used either to mount as a virtual drive from the hard drive, or to burn to a disc. Windows will also natively support .mp4. If he has Windows Media Player (or other software player) installed. He should be able to mount the ISO as a virtual drive (simply by clicking on the ISO file) and then selecting the virtual drive Windows creates to playback on Media Player. If you use mp4 file that is not within an ISO, your son should be able to play directly without having to mount it first.
