Yes it would work like an external DVD drive but you would have a more variety of choices for drives. As for the enclosures to put the drive in you have a large selection for that and they either use internal power or external power. I myself am planning to order 3 enclosures from either newegg or tigerdirect not sure as I still need to see which enclosure would suite my needs

This is what I have:
Dell Latitude D620 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Laptop
Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
I'm trying to stay to a price range of $40-$50 for a dvd burner, not because I'm being cheap but just what I can afford for now. I have found a few but would love an expert opinion from ya'll on what you think would work best with what I have. Any recommendations are sincerely appreciated. I have looked thru google til my brain is spinning and honestly just don't know what to really look for other than 'dvd burner' not 'rom' lol.
Thanks AGJ! I must have posted right after you cause I didnt see it until I already had lol. I have looked and looked and just don't know what brands are compatible, will I need power cords or a usb cord...etc. etc. I am not completely computer illiterate...but I am no techy either by a long shot (really really long shot we're talkin about here) This is my first laptop and my first time getting into conversion of dvds and whatnot. Got into it at first looking for a way to 1.Be able to share my dvds with family without having them ruined, lost, scratched, etc. and 2. Converting dvds to ipod for my son and myself because we are addicted to ipods lol.Last edited by Wicked One; 05-14-2010, 04:56 AM.'Mess With The Best...Die Like The Rest' ~From the Movie 'Hackers'~

I just posted this for another member.
Check out the 2 links in the post.
Excellent prices for externals and decent choicesIf it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Thanks so much and I will. I did go look also at Walmart.com and Best Buy.com because I thought I might find a decently priced one and also I would be able to just go pick it up this weekend instead of having to wait for it to come in the mail...I am impatient and I have a grandson who likes to eat and destroy dvds so yeah, I want to burn them their own so mine are protected asap...but the prices at NewEgg are pretty good so I am still stuck and most of the ones I have found at retail stores are slim ones and look very breakable to me lol.'Mess With The Best...Die Like The Rest' ~From the Movie 'Hackers'~

The egg is generally very prompt.
My orders usually arrive within 3 days and this without additional fees.
Almost always, I get free shipping and speedy service.
They really are the bestIf it ain't broke, don't fix it!

IO Magic
I would highly recommend the IO Magic external drive for around $80 at Staples.
The drive does not have any RIPLOCK firmware code. I generally get 12MBps ripping a dvd to my laptop's hard drive. The Toshiba drive generally gets around 4MBps, which is a huge difference.
