Can't Rip "Old Dogs" w/ DVDFab 7.0.6.2

DVDFab (current ver) will not complete the analyze phase reading the "Old Dogs" DVD. At about 50% completion, Windows7 (64bit) gives a "stopped working" notice with the following info:

The disc seems very clean but I get read errors running VSO Inspector.

Then I tried playing the disc on the same drive using VLC Player and no problems at all.

Then I tried ripping with an older ver of DVDFab (ver. 6.2.2.0) that I still have loaded. That rip (to an .iso file) completed flawlessly.

When using each version I have it set for PathPlayer to always be active.

Following is a clip from the dvdfab_internal.log file showing the failed rip with ver 7, followed by a good rip with ver 6 and then another bad run with ver 7.

Since I can play the DVD with VLC Player and rip it with an older version of DVDFab, I don't think it is a defective disc. But why can't I get a rip with version 7 and why the read errors in VSO Inspector?

If you are getting read errors with VSO Inspector you have a defective disc and the chance of getting a good copy is very slim.
Replace the disc.

Still have prob w/DVDFab Reading DVD

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack or dbl post. The forum rules said to search for my problem before posting. I did that and tacked on to one that seemed the same. After I did the post, I couldn't find it so I retyped/posted it again. My bad. Anyway, my problem is ripping rather than burning. Once i get a good rip (using an older version of DVDFab) I can burn the file fine with ImgBurn.

Again, VLC Player will play the DVD on my PC (as will my Sony DVD player on my stereo) and the DVD will read/rip with an older version of DVDFab. So, I still wonder if I may have something set wrong on my install of DVDFab 7.0.6.4

You stated VSO Inspector found errors.
As stated in post #4 you are not likely to get a good copy because you have a defective disc.

The fact that VLC will play it does not void the fact that you have a defective disc as far as being able to copy it.

As far as it working with older version of Fab that is why many of the old hands keep several versions on the computer. Never hurts to try with an older version.

You may not be using VSO Inspector correctly.
If you just scan an encrypted disc, you'll receive read errors.

Do one of these two methods:
Open a software player such as VLC and click play, stop play, but do not exit the player.
Now open Vso Inspector and scan the disc, all the while keeping the software open, but obviously not playing.
...or
Open Fab Passkey which is essentially a windows-based driver which will run in the background and decrypt .
Open VSO Inspector and scan.

Despite the disc appearing "clean", clean it regardless.

Disk Read Errors that aren't Errors

Thanks for the heads up on proper use of VSO Inspector. I tried doing a scan with the DVD opened by VLC Player and still got errors. I waited until it got past the FBI warning and the movie started, then "stopped" the movie (rather than doing a "pause"). Then started VSO Inspector and did a scan. I had better luck with DVDFab Passkey - got a clean scan.

So, it looks like what I was calling errors on my initial scan were just a form of copy protection.

I downloaded the beta of DVDFab 7.0.6.5 and it handled the DVD fine (tried it before I installed DVDFab Passkey). So, it looks like some versions earlier than version 7.0.6.2 and the Beta that follows it will rip this DVD. But version 7.0.6.2 will not. So it looks like there may be a glitch in that version.

By the way, I had already tried most of the Tips on Troubleshooting that you linked to. That is one of my bookmarks that I go to when I have ripping problems. Thanks for putting that together.

Glad we could help.
I'm a little surprised you didn't get a more reliable scan with VLC open, but it's tough to beat Passkey...a really solid, little gem of an app.

Anyway, glad to hear you figured it out and it wasn't a bad disc.
There are more defects out there than there should be, that's for sure,
