Or if that doesn't work you can check it manually. Go to "Device Manager" and click on the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" tab then there should be a few "ATA Channel" tabs with a number after it. Right click on each one and go to "Properties" then the "Advanced Settings" tab. It should say something like "Target ID" "Device Type" "Current Mode"<----under this one it will say Ultra DMA Mode 6 or similar if DMA is enabled. Do this for each "ATA Channel" to make sure its working on each device. Some won't say anything, just go to the next one. And make sure each one has the box labeled "Enable DMA" ticked.SPECS

Sorry for my short answer before, I'm working too darn much these days.
Yup, I see my friends picked up the slack (ya gotta love that)
As they suggest:
First off, Common Settings > General > Reset DMA button.
(This doesn't always stick though).
Here's a nice little guide for XP to go along with what Racem22 described:

If persistent problems, you can also unistall your burners in device manager and reboot.
XP will recognize the "new hardware" automatically, install them and assign the appropriate drivers.
For particicularly stubborn problems, you can run a patch, .VBS Script File

This is a windows issue. As windows encounters CRC errors (usually the result of reading data from a dirty, damaged, etc., disc), it will sequentially decrease the rate of data transfer until the magic number of 6 CRC errors is reached, at which point, your ODD will be stuck in PIO mode.
Here's probably more info than you want, but will shed some light on what 90312 was describing:
