    Ubuntu 10.04/wine/Linux help

I only use DVDFab HD Decrypter every now and then and sometimes it's easy to get to work and sometimes it's a head ache. I know there is no Linux/wine support but are there any Linux users, better yet Ubuntu 10.04 users, that have the latest 7070 version working? How did you get it running?

I'm using Wine 1.2-rc6, maybe that is my problem? I always use the bleeding edge wine when I use it. I could drop down to 1.0.1 and see if that helps.

Has anyone gotten the latest DVDFab HD Decrypter working on Linux right now? Anything special you need to do for this release? Also, I'm thinking of going blu-ray, might get a blu-ray-rom for my computer and a blu-ray player for my HDTV, how is ripping blu-ray and encoding it on Linux once you have DVDFab HD Decrypter going?

I'm almost positive that your issue is linux itself. Since DVDFab isn't supported you will have issues the entire time you use it. Its just not coded right for linux. Your best bet is to install Windows on a separate partition or something. I mean maybe there is a couple users on the forum who run DVDFab on linux but I've never seen any discussions about it.

DISCLAIMER: Only Windows running on bare hardware is supported (no VM) and one or more of the moderators here are rather hostile toward anything else. However, I'll share my own experiences as time permits.

I currently use DVDFab 7.0.7.8 (and most previous versions) on Ubuntu 10.04 with Wine 1.1.42 (standard from the package manager) without too many issues.

      * You cannot register DVDFab in Wine. Only the free version will work.
      * Navigating the settings is tricky once you open them (green checkmark). To change the selected settings page click the mouse once in the white area below "File Mover" and then hit the down arrow on the keyboard. Repeat the click and down arrow until the correct setting you want to change is displayed.
      * You need to turn off the preview feature. Start DVDFab without a disc in the drive, click the green checkmark to bring up settings, under Setting > General > Preview uncheck the box show preview and change the decoder to internal.
      * The "More..." selections just crash DVDFab. Select/move the items you want to see in the settings under Customize UI.
      * DVDFab is not able to detect disc insertion very well in Wine. Put the disc in, wait for it to come up in the Ubuntu file browser and then start DVDFab.

DVDFab works perfectly in Virtualbox once you configure VB to allow passthrough on the optical drive. However, VB plus full Windows has a lot of overhead so encodes are slow. I use DVDFab in Wine for ripping and other software for encoding. Occasionally I'll fire up VB and use the full version of DVDFab for something but it is a painfully slow process.

I did go out a buy a BD-ROM drive a while back and Blu-Ray also works in Wine. This is one area where the slowness of VB really hurts since you are limited to 2 CPUs in the VM and cannot use GPU acceleration. During the trial period of DVDFab, Blu-Ray recoding worked well enough with much better speed but still no GPU acceleration. Of course the trial also had the DVDFab watermark so those encodes got thrown out as non-watchable.

I KNOW that Linux is not supported, I'm just wondering if anyone on this forum has gotten this new version running on Linux. When I last ran it, not a few months ago, it ran great. I know running windows software in Linux can be problematic, this is the last piece of software that I have to use wine for other than a few games.

I don't own a copy of windows so I can't install it, I don't believe in software piracy and buying it for one program that costs a third or less of windows(yet I only need the free version of DVDFab) is just not in my budget.

Anyway, I am not wanting to start a debate, I am just wondering if there are any people that use Linux and wine on this forum that have it working. I understand that I can't expect any official support but can I ask the question on here? If not I'll go somewhere else but I'm not demanding support just asking for help.

EDIT: Oops, didn't see your post before I hit reply Complication. Not being able to decode is not a problem for me, I just use handbrake anyway and if I couldn't encode blu-ray on handbrake I could just archive the ISO for backup. 20 gigs is a lot to backup but the cost of that is better than buying 10 blu-rays and something happening to them. I don't own any right now but I might get some like I said before.

I just wanted to make sure people didn't think I was a Linux zealot that demanded DVDFab be ported to Linux is all. Also, I didn't see your post until after I hit replied, sorry.

Anyway, it looks like it works except for the first disk of Season 1 of SG1, every other disk works. I'll have to have a friend rip the first disk for me, not that big of a deal. I'm almost through season 1 and that is the only disk giving me problems, so I hope none of the next 9 seasons give me trouble.

            Thanx,
            Stan

LOL, I feel so stupid. I just got SG1 the complete series for my Dad, that is 10 seasons witch is 50 DVDs, brand new, just out of the box. I couldn't rip the first disk, it would crash DVDFab, so I went along with the others. I decided I'd try [other software] to just rip it, it's slow if it is not on the hard disk but I decided what the heck. [other software] couldn't scan past title one so I went to check it for scratches and it has big sticky fingerprints on it. I have to stress this is a brand new set, factory sealed, I'm the only one to touch them and I'm ripping them for my Dad because he likes to have it on his ASUS Oplayair rather than going through the DVD menus.

Anyway, It is ripping now, someone in the factory must have been eating candy when they were packing them. I didn't even think to look for scratches and fingerprints since they were new, I thought since it was crashing it was a problem with wine or Ubuntu, but low and behold it was just a dirty disk. Yeah, I feel stupid.

                To all DVDFAB users,
DVDFAB is my most used program in WIN. So much so I was wondering if this may just be wishful thinking. Is it possible to have a WIN OS, on a USB flash drive that has one purpose only and that is to be plugged in when you want to use DVDFAB on a Linux OS. Ubuntu has four desktop screens, My computer has two DVD drives. One is for Using DVDFAB, while the other is just there to be used if necessary for anything that crops up.

So That's my dream. A bare bone WIN OS that runs one app only. No Vitualisation! Then! when Done, unplug and Hey Presto! Mission accomplished.

This type of request is beyond the purview of this forum.

It would be better addressed in either Windoze or Linux forums.

And do not hijack other members threads.

                    Hijacking

Please excuse my ignorance, but why is commenting on DVDFAB, Hijacking. I thought a forum was a place where you discussed issues and I just added what I thought was a reasonable comment on how to get DVDFAB to work in Linux.

But if you don't want people to put forward ideas, Hey That's cool. I was warned that Linux was like an exclusive club where all the geeks sorta hang out and talk a different language to the dummies like me who just use computers to do stuff like burn movies, write letters and Google for information and stuff that is useful.

So! To whoever owns this thread ( Am I the needle?) or subject that I have commented on. Sorry! I thought you were inviting others to discuss the subject. In future I'll just read and keep my ignorant thoughts to myself.

This thread is about getting DVDFab working under Wine and Linux. If your comments are not toward that end then you are hijacking the thread (e.g. changing the subject).

You could start your own thread, but GregiBoy is right. You should find a forum where they might have experience running Windows from a thumb drive. The forums here are dedicated to installation and use of DVDFab, not an OS. We give tips here on using DVDFab under different conditions but you are way beyond that.

                        DVD FAB and Linux

Sorry, I thought my comment was a way to try and get DVDFAB to work on linux. That's why I'm in this forum. I can't get DVDDAB to do what I want in Linux and am still using Win 7. I'll try elsewhere in the Linux World. Thanks for your help.

I enabled passthrough on virtual box (windows 7 guest on ubuntu 10.10), but I still cannot get dvdfab to recognize dvds. And if I play the dvd on media player it gives me an error about copy protection between my encoder or something. So I figured that was a bigger problem than I could handle and tried it on wine. The only problem is that is only reads the first couple minutes of each title, so a DVD5 rip is only 123MB. And I followed your advice about disableing preview and such

This sounds like you have other issues than DVDFab. It is probably something interfering with the DVD access. Make sure you have enabled DVD decryption in Ubuntu (google it) and disabled auto-playback. Also, make sure you have tried a few different DVDs from different studios to make sure it isn't something specific to the title you are using.

I use DVDFab with Wine once or twice a week so take heart that it can indeed work. I'm still on Ubuntu 10.04 however. Good luck.

Hey thanks for the direction I've now successfully completed two DVDs! I followed directions here to get the formats and I followed the directions here to completely remove wine. The I reinstalled wine and it worked.
