Other Help totally confused need some experts

Ok I am totally confused here, I am trying to convert my collection over and I want them all in MP4 because I just like the format; however Im confused on

MP4 and Generic in both of them you can pic MP4 and they both auto select a difference resolution, so which one do I want? and 128 on sound is that adequate, I put the bitrate at 2000, im copying over some chuck norris movies right now they look decent on my xbox streamed however I want to make sure I use a general MP4 format that compatible with most devices PS3, or anything that I would stream with

so all in all, is MP4 generic.264.acc (what is acc? compatible with most devices to stream to?) or mp4 default the one to use? is it the same as mpeg4? Is one better than another?

what are the best settings? both video , bitrate, and audio?

I am not playing this on any special device I just want the most universal, I read up mp4 is a very good standard to use, also these are all being played on a plasma and lcd tv, no ipods or anything of that sort, all the dvds are being ripped to be played on a HD TV.

For starters, I'd read over GregiBoy's

There is a wealth of general info there as well as specific advice

Then I'd recommend taking a look at the thread:

in the DVD to Mobile subforum and try out some of the profiles.
No point in re-inventing the wheel.

Additionally, I'd use the search function and look around the entire subforum

I disagree on the MP4 format.

If your device supports it, I have found that the generic.h264.mkv.audiocopy the best with newer players that support MKV.

The most universal playback profile that I have found is using the generic.avi.xvid.audiocopy profile as nearly all devices will play this format but you should test with the devices that you are targeting.

There is no one universal standard.

I choose a resolution close to the original DVD (720 x XXX) and always the Dolby Digital soundtrack with a bitrate of 1100 but sometimes sneak this up to 1400 if the title has fast action scenes.

AAC is "Advanced Audio Coding" and not all players support it.

Few Questions on DVD to Mobile

Ok few questions, I like MP4s as they seem be supported by almost anything I try them on as opposed to MKV however;

I am doing these to have them used on my 46" LCD and Plasma through PS3 or Xbox or anything else that does streaming in my home, when in the DVD to mobile menu I dont understand a few things, like the difference from picking mp4 vs generic?


1: On the left I can pick Generic, or MP4? Whats generic mean as opposed to MP4, when I pick generic I still pick mp4.h264.acc so whats the difference?

2: what bit rate should I shoot for on these 2000?

3. What is audio copy mean, just a straight copy of the audio source?

You are actually using the same profile as it is registered in both sections

I use between 1100 & 1800 depending on the title. As I said, I increase the bitrate for movies with fast action scenes

That is exactly what it means, which means there is no conversion or possible loss in quality.

Ok here are the last questions,

1. I noticed on some video files I have on my computer they dont say avi or mp4 they say "AVCHD" what is that and how can I get that?

2. someone told me that avi with h264 can have issues, however is h264 better for quality if so I want to remain using that.

also greigi boy what format do you think is best for dvd rips to hard drive for compatibility with most players for streaming? I was looking through what videos i do have and they are all avchd and avi with a few mp4s, I thought mp4 was a newer quality format? Im open to any advice

AVCHD = BluRay

MP4 is a container, so are AVI & MKV, MKV being the latest.

What I think you are getting at is XVid, H264, etc how the video is encoded, H264 being the newer and I feel better codec.

If you can't play MKV's on your players, I suggest that you download my Samsung profile from the "New Profiles" section of the forum and give that a shot.

I did, Ive googled everything I could, I know what codec Im going to use, just wasnt sure about avchd however now Im just looking for an opinion on the best container to use besides mkv, its the only question I have left

By reading your posts I was under impression that you didn't read that. But this is not the point. The point is better than MKV is another MKV.
AVI and MP4 are equally suck (there a millions who will throw stone at me right this moment, but that's the truth). The only reason we still use these containers because we were forced to. You are example of what I'm saying - none of your gadgets can play anything modern. They are primitive and technologically dead; they cant handle new efficient codecs (that's why AVI having problems with H264ncontent), etc. etc. Anyway, between these two, I would choose mp4 - you can use it in other devices (iPod, iPad and other Apple's products).
M2TS is very exotic container, used primarily for HD content....

Ok well thats helps me, MP4 is it, however MKV sounds like the best period, there is a program tversity I could use I looked up that can read mkv and transcode them on the fly, Im new to all this stuff sounds like the codec def is h264, just wasnt sure about the container, are mkv files typically larger ,smaller? And just for the hell of it any opinion on audio? aac vs mp3 vs audio copy etc?
