Scavenged BD ROM drive

Greetings forum,
I have a Memorex Blu-ray player that has quit working so I took the BD-ROM out of it and put it in my HTPC. It works! The computer recognizes it and it will play a DVD fine. DVD Fab will recognize a Blu-ray disk but hangs up in the analyze stage. Could this be a hardware/firmware issue?

Any ideas are appreciated.

Sounds as though the drive is fubar.

I've seen stranger things happen, especially when dealing with old equipment out of old machines. On your old machine, more than the drive may have been damaged, making it look like the entire drive was fried. Then when you moved it to another machine, you get some of the functionality back.

I suppose you could try a firmware upgrade - couldn't hurt. But I suspect that it's done for.
