    DVDfab & PS3 & custom subtitles

I'm 99% sure that i need to purchase both DVD to DVD and BR to BR to do my job, but a question is always free of charge so, here it goes

First of all i want to backup all my DVD and BR movies to my hard drive (for backup & playback) with loseless quality, but i'd also like to be able to play them over Playstation 3 (slim). I can transfer the generated movie-file/folder into PS3's hdd no matter the size of the DVDfab backup (copying them through Media Server + wireless connection, hence there's no problem with FAT32 ex.hdd) but i don't know if it will be able to play them, since (if i'm not mistaken) PS3 recognises only mpeg4.
So, my question is how will i be able, without losing in quality if possible, make the DVDfab backup play into the PS3 ?

The second question is how if i can import my own subtitles to a DVDfab copied movie (dvd & br) by using DVDfab, or i have to use 3rd party programs to edit the copied movie.

Thanks in advace & keep up the good work

    Hi,

    Here what i did:

for DVDs: in dvdfab select language you want to be in your movie, use vob passthrough and you can copy to ps3 via media server (ps3 media server is the best). It is better to use ethernet instead of wifi.

+ you do not lose quality
    - you can choose language, some movies do not have the perfect ratio (like bridget jones), AC3 is supported, DTS isn't (i'm not sure)

For HD movies: mkv are not supported. you can watch them with ps3 media server, but you have to turn on your PC.

You can extract to a MTS or M2TS file which is supported by the ps3. MTS and M2TS are like vob for dvd. So you have to choose the language you want to listen to while watching your movie.

I recommand to compress your blu ray to BD9 1080p, you have very good quality for less than 9go.

500go on the PS3 is very good, I don't know if a 640go hdd is supported by the ps3.

Hope I answered to your question.

    Bye

The PS3 if very picky about formats. DVD Copy and BR Copy can put things on the hard drive but the standard disc formats are not readable by the PS3. The PS3 limitations have been discussed here many times before so you can look for them. DVDFab forum search doesn't like short 3 letter terms so you need to use google: "ps3 site:forum.dvdfab.com" without the quotes.

Your next problem is subtitles. You would either need to burn them in to the video during a re-encode or use the DIVX container for selectable subtitles. Again there are ample existing threads on this.

The bottom line is that you are likely going to need DVD Ripper and BR Ripper (not Copy) to do what you are looking for. I highly recommend purchasing all 4 products together in the lifetime license to give you maximum flexibility. For example, this would allow you to copy in disc format to the hard drive and then queue up 10 different ripper tasks to run overnight (encoding takes a while). Authoring varies from DVD to DVD and BD to BD so having all 4 also allows you to use other tools on the discs (like manipulating the subtitles) before encoding with DVD/BD Ripper.

I'm not paid by DVDFab and simply voluteer here so don't let the moderator status color your opinion of what I have suggested.

No need to explain yourself, afterall i'm trying to get my job done and so are you . Truth is i never checked the DVDFab Ripper programs that's why i had only the Copy ones in my mind. Apart from that, i lost you where you mention about 10 ripper tasks so, let me see if i got it right with an example.

Say i have 3 dvd movies, one with the prefered subtitles while i want to put my custon subtitles in the rest two. Plus i want to watch them all in my ps3.

        1) I run DVD Copy to copy the movies in my PC. Now i can play them in my PC & burn them in a dvd when i want, but i cannot play them over PS3 so;

        2) I run DVD Ripper to rip them in mpeg4 (by ripping the DVD Folders produced by DVD Copy) and also put my custom subtitles to the two movies. After that i can store them in the PS3 and play them.

        Questions:

        - Is the above thinking correct ?

        - How much in quality i lose when i rip in mp4 instead of a dvd9 ?

        - I edit the subtitles with DVD Ripper or another 3rd party program (i assumed the "You can select your favorite audio track and subtitle for the output. Plus, you can decide how to deal with the subtitle as to render directly to video or extract to idx/sub files" means you can edit the subtitles with Ripper) ?

        - If i do not want to burn the movies in backup dvds, is DVD Ripper at least enough to store the them in the PC ? In other words, the only reason of using DVD Copy is if i want to backup a movie without losing nothing in quality (aka dvd9) ?

from the guides area will explain why I said setup 10 ripper tasks (queue).

DVDFab cannot be used to modify subtitles. You will need a third party app and this is not the correct forum to discuss those apps.

My guess is that you would want to do the following:
-DVDFab Copy Full or Main Movie to copy one or more movies to the hard drive
-Queue up all movies in DVDFab Ripper as AVI output with XVID video and extract idx/sub (this step will take some time depending on your computer specs and what settings you use)
-Modify subtitle files as desired (no idea what to use here but videohelp.com may be a useful resource)
-Use AVIAddXSub (google it) to combine AVI and subtitles into a DIVX container
-Play files on PS3 and use the select button to activate the subtitles.

Yes, you can skip the DVD Copy to the hard drive and use Ripper directly but you will keep your DVD drive spinning for the entire video encoding step and you will only be able to queue up what fits in your DVD drive(s).

Much of your questions can be answered by browsing or searching the forums. I invite you to do so.

Thanks for the answers mate, fact is that i'm doing my army duty now and i don't have much time searching the forums, hence i prefered to directly create a post (otherwise i do use forum searches).

I got some last questions after reading the Guide about DVD Ripper, first is that Ripper does rip files to the hard disk, so, why you say "you can skip the DVD Copy to the hard drive and use Ripper directly but you will keep your DVD drive spinning for the entire video encoding step and you will only be able to queue up what fits in your DVD drive(s)". To my eyes, i rip all the dvds to the hdd first and then i can batch convert them later when i want, but i might be missing something in the whole story.

Second, is about the quality of the converted movie which, tbh, is the most important for me. To be more specific, i have a 32'' Samsung TV, which is a huge difference (in quality demand) from say a 52'' TV. The author of the Guide and the Fab site (in Ripper's description) state "almost DVD/BR quality output", but do i really need to worry that much about quality for a 32'' TV, or i do too much fuss for nothing?

PS: Also, as i sidenote and no offence taken, i'd like to suggest a Product Comparison table that will help intrested customers (like me) decide which product is best for their needs. Just like Autodesk or Microsft have for their different versions of their programs.

You were advised to do a search and some reading becuase many of your questions have either no simple answer or they require you to gain a level of knowledge that is hard to convey in a simple post.

The naming of DVDFab Copy and Ripper is unfortunate. You use Copy to "rip all the dvds to the hdd first" and then use Ripper to "batch convert them later when i want".

Quality is subjective and varies depending on the playback device, your tolerance for video errors, the size and quality of the viewing device (TV), and how far you sit from it. Again, this has been discussed and argued about many times before for your reading pleasure.

                NOW i got it mate

My misunderstanding had to do with the official PS3 guides (ie. ) where i was seeing the 3rd image with the Queue; i didn't notice both queued tasks were reading the source media (hence the dvd icon), but i thought they were queued movies (already ripped in hdd with Ripper).

So, bottom line, you were right that i need both DVD + BR Copy & Ripper
