    Other DVD playback issue

    Hi guys,

here's a non-dvd fab question, but your help would be very appreciated...

having problems recently with DVD/Blu-Ray playback on my PC. They are not playing with fluidity (excuse my english !)... It's like if they are playing at 10x speed for a short burst, then skips, then start again shortly at like 10x...

It's the same with either an original disk or a burned disk (tried with 2 differents burners). All those discs play fine on my PS3.

I just reformatted my HD. I'm experiencing this with PowerDVD10. Windows Media Player and Nero MediaHub won't even read the discs anymore...

    Running Win7 64.

Video card is an ATI HD4870, running with latest drivers (10.10).

Any ideas to investigate/fix this big problem (no DVD/blu-ray playback!) would really help !

    thx

I'm pretty certain of the answers, but...
Is this the same burner involved each time?
Are you able to try with another BD burner or BD-ROM drive?
Do you have any BD files on your hdd that you can playback with a software player?

Sounds like your burner is on the fritz

I'd do some testing with a benchmarking utility such as nero cd-dvd speed.
The older versions are still available as freeware, but nero now charges $25 for it and calls it Opti-Drive.

Here's a safe freeware link for cd-dvd speed. This version can handle BD discs and should be able to do what you need:
    Nero CD-DVD Speed v4.7.7.16...
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Hi ! I'm having the same result with playing the .ifo files from my hard drive, so not optical drive related... Nonetheless, I have 2 optical drives and same result with both... it's really an issue with my PC now being unable to play correctly DVD/Bluray files.

      any clues ??

I'm not sure about nero, but the others rely on external codecs, and probably nero as well.

Try Media Player Classic...free and excellent:

MPC-HC, the free, open source media player for Windows

Hi ! I reinstalled my PC just to be sure. I also have Windows XP on my partition and there I played the DVD using Nero MediaHub without problems.

Now, with the freshlly reinstalled Win7, still the same issue (won't play). I tried your software, I get to the menu but when I launch it stalls..

damn pretty complicated problem !! HELP !

Hi ! Did not help... all ok under XP, but all messed up in Win7. I suspect Nero 10 because it installs a bunch of DirectX9 at the beginning, but I went afterwards on microsoft.com to install the latest DirectX end-user files...
Even PowerDVD is messed up, reads the disc but plays it but skipping/choppy...

Well, I fixed my issue, so if it can help someone out there :

                - I reformatted (again) my PC
                - Installed Win7 (without updates)
                - Installed my drivers
                - Installed Nero & Nero updates
                - Installed Windows updates (microsoft update)

In that order, I can play my DVDs fine in either media player or Nero MediaHub (DVD/BluRay).
